Do Computer Glasses work?

So a GQ thread about computer glasses got me to thinking it’s time I actually went and bought a pair. I spend no less than 12 hours every day on a computer of somesort or another, and I’m already squinting to see through my reading glasses.

Do these anti-glare glasses work? If so, how well? The ones I’ve seen are all in the $30 - $70 range, and that’s a little more than I was hoping to spend on a simple pair of glasses at this point. Can I take my current glasses in to have this anti-glare coating applied to them (hopefully cheaper than buying a new pair)?

Yes, you should be able to get anti-glare coating applied to your current glasses, although it may cost about as much as buying a second pair of specific anti-glare glasses. I can’t remember if I shelled out the money for anti-glare coating on my reading glasses, but my mom has it on her bi-focals and she says it’s really helped her.

BTW, as mentioned in the GQ thread, computer glasses are just generic reading glasses with a special anti-glare coating. I wouldn’t suggest replacing your prescription reading glasses with “computer glasses.” If your squinting has to do with the text being fuzzy or blurry, you probably should have your eyes checked and your prescription updated. If the problem is just glare / reflections, then check with your optometrist about having the anti-glare coating added to your current lenses.

The optician I go to said it would be impractical to apply the anti-glare coating to an existing set of lenses because they most likely have existing tiny scratches and irregularities in the surface already. The best method, she said, is to have the coating applied to the brand-new lenses before they are even put into the frames.

 yes… they do work… i can now sit for hours and work on the puter and not get headaches from the glare… they also help with night driving… i would get them

Awesome! Yeah, I’ve been meaning to get some for awhile, but I wasn’t sure how effective they were. Night driving is a thing for me too, good to know they’ll help with that too.

Does anybody know of any brands that are particularly good? I’ve looked online and so far the most prevalent ones I’ve found are made & distributed by Yahoo! but they only come in limited styles, none of which I find particularly attractive. Any reputable (and affordable) dealers out there?

I dont mean to be smart or sarcastic though it may sound like I am being but, can you not just pick any regular glasses you like and then get the lens to match those glasses coated with the anti glare coating. Ive got anti glare on mine (its really worth getting btw:)) and basically all I had to do was pick out a pair of glasses and the optician ordered the lens and made them to fit my choice of glasses. I know Ireland is a lot different from the US, but surely if you can do it here you can do it there
Good Luck with finding the right pair anyway:)

I think people are saying “glasses” meaning the lenses. Obviously the frames are separate and can be used many times for different lenses.
