OK, so I have been posting here for a while. I have over 2000 posts. Yet I still feel like an outsider. I am not in on any inside jokes. I don’t share any witty sparring with anybody. I don’t have a nemisis. And hardly anybody responds to my posts.
Does anybody have anything but apathy for me? Does anybody hate me? Find amusement in my posts? Feel helped by my advice? Remember any of my posts? Know anything about me (job?age?location?)? Would anybody give a rat’s ass if I quit posting here? Would anybody notice?
I hate when the depression sets in. I give this thread 3 hours before it drops off the first page and into obscurity.
I don’t know who you are(seen you a couple times, but don’t remember the posts), but I know the feeling you are getting. I have to kind of force my way in sometimes. I sometimes get replies to my posts, but when I start a new thread…whiz, bam, fizzzzle, sink. I guess I am not as interesting as I thought I am. I have probably bored you to sleep, or even death.
Just one more hour before this thread either sinks or swims by your judgement. I am sure it will keep on floating. Of course I have a tendency to kill threads. Maybe I shouldn’t have posted…
I have the same problem. I don’t have your impressive post count, but I’m reasonably active. Occasionally someone will say something nice about what I said in a thread, but I have yet to see any evidence that anyone actually remembers who I am.
Just remember that people are about 100X more likely to remeber what you say than who you are. If you say interesting, witty, thoughtful things, people will notice repeat them, even though they won’t remember where they picked them up. I’ve had good RL friends repeat back to me things I said to them a few years before–they don’t remember where tehy picked up that piece of advice or that way of looking at the world, but they liked it, so they internilized it. With all the lurkers nad such, that happends 10X as much here. Furthermore, with everything so slow, people tend not to take the time (and the bandwidth) to say “Good idea! Wow, you’re smart!”. That dosen’t mean they don’t think it. Challenge yourself to be a subversive influence, not a celeberity.
Up until this morning I would have said that I have been here two years and over 1000 posts and have not established any identity at all, but then Sue Dunym started a pit thread complimenting me-I am still overawed by that. So at least a few people have noticed me. So don’t think that no one has noticed you, or, more important, noticed what you have been saying.
Xizor, I know who you are. Mostly because you use the same name as one of the editors I’m working with over on http://www.netemp.net. So I always recognize your posts.
Don’t feel bad. No one knows who I am or responds to my posts either. I once asked in a flirt thread if I was invisible. Apparently I was. I stay out of flirt threads now.
I don’t think it’s a matter of having a personality, I think it’s a matter of having a personality that plays to this crowd. I’m beginning to think this might not be my crowd. But I like em’ anyway. The teeming millions amuse me to no end even if they don’t seem to respond to my brillant logic and witty comments. But I post anyway in the hope that I have a lurker fan club out there somewhere.
And things are looking up for you now. I wish I had a nemesis like Munch.

And you say you’re a superhero? I don’t have any super powers at all… I’ll have to get one of those utility belt things I suppose. Say, do you think Batman would let me borrow his? You know, if I promised not to do anything too villianous with it. A little mayham here, a bit of chaos there, a quick grab for power at the next city council meeting, showing nothing but Battlefield Earth on HBO for a month or so…
It must be the phase of the moon, or perhaps the proliferation of “Favorite Doper” threads that name the same folks over and over… perhaps we of the less flambuoyant natures should make a pact to mention each other in those love-fest threads. I, for one, wouldn’t mind an adoring mob or two every once in a so often.
Maybe we should harness the power of the lurkers some way… We could give them their very own forum! Although I suppose blank pages would be pretty dull…
Well, I don’t know if this will make anyone feel better, but I immediately recognized all of the names so far in this thread. Then again, I’m here just about every day, so I probably see a lot of names here. I hardly ever remember actual quotes or threads by anyone, though.
Part of the reason I opened this thread is because I recognized xizor’s name. Again, I’m not sure I remember any specific posts of yours, but I do recognize you as someone I enjoy sharing the board with.
I feel much the way you do as well. There are days I think I could make 100 posts, and I’d kill every last thread I posted to. I’m not looking for a nemisis, mind you, but it would be nice to be noticed. (Yeah, yeah, I know you can all hear the violins).

That’s so cool, I thought about taking fencing with the local club. I always thought it would be kick ass to know how to duel. I get all these fantasy’s of the world ending and I’m one of the few to survive, I have the dueling skills unmatched by any. I am the bad ass babe that saves the day and fights forward with my clan.
