I was wondering if managers and HR people bother to hunt through “position wanted” ads? Are they just a waste of time?

No one important looks a them. Don’t bother.
I would say it depends on the economy. Right now there are too many people chasing too few jobs, so I think it would be a waste of time.
That said, though, when I first got out of college back in the mid-80s I put a Position Wanted ad in a trade magazine and got several calls and an interview as a result of it.
Huh? I thought those were about sex.
No one checks out those ads except cons playing on your desperation and trying to sell you something useless.
