Clearly this wouldn’t exactly be within the bounds of civil discourse, but a new one was born today and at some point a chance will arise to use it. But would it draw a mod warning?
Which Forum? I would say in GD or the like, it would be against the rules. It’s personal.
In the BBQ Pit, it would not get a warning, but maybe mod action as a “go fuck yourself” euphemism.
Depends on the context. If it were used in GQ, I suppose it might get a mod note if it were a deliberate attempt to be rude. The phrase itself doesn’t seem to mean much of anything, so it’s hard to say.
I’m not really sure why anyone would want to use such a phrase.
Well, if someone says something that is both insulting and stupid, a person could push back against the insult while also suggesting they reconsider their idea, without being entirely insulting themselves.
This actually happened in the US Senate today. Mitch McConnell ended up filibustering his own motion. He thought he was bluffing the Democrats. They didn’t fall for it.
In the on-going Congressional Vaudeville Show, I missed that one. Could you give a cite so I can go and read it too? Sounds like a hoot.
This was on Lawrence O’Donnel’s show on MSNBC tonight.
I agree it depends on the context. If it were clearly intended as an insult, I’d moderate it.
Can you post a bunch of pictures with the caption “I’d moderate that!”?
Thanks.
Also, I know I’m not supposed to jump into politics here, but as to fillibustering himself, I’m tempted to ask if McConnell is getting stupider, or just louder.
Louder seems to be the only possible option.
If someone says something you consider insulting and stupid, your best recourse is just to report the post and let the mods handle it rather than trying to retaliate yourself.
I still don’t think the remark makes a lot of sense.
I think someone posting that would be hard pressed to explain how it was NOT intended as backhanded way of saying go fuck yourself. But that’s just me.
On the other hand, “Go Dave and Buster yourself” might mean “Have a good time!”
Hey, so this leading influential senator filibusters himself – publicly, no less – and didn’t get arrested and no one’s accused himself of public indecency or lewd acts yet (meaning, not specifically for filibustering himself, that is). So there must not be anything wrong with it.
I say, if anyone tells me to go filibuster myself, I’d take it as a compliment! :o
In the right political context I bet it could work.
Two things that can spoil a good laugh are a punch in the nose and over-analyzing things. It is two days later and I am still laughing at McConnell. I don’t know you very well, so do you mind playing along while I take your ‘comedy temperature’?
[loud Hitler voice] Two peanuts were walking down the road. One was a salted.
Yes or no, did you think that was funny?
Well all right. If it comes to that just watch your tone, or you might have to give yourself a warning too. If that happens, look, nobody’s perfect, relax, please don’t beat yourself up. Cuz if you did, you’d probably have to ban yourself.
Colibri, did you think that was funny?
If someone used that remark on me I’d assume it was probably meant as a joke.
I wasn’t aware there is now a rule against euphemisms in the Pit.
I think you’re right. I did say “maybe”, but now I’m thinking that’s wrong.
I think the phrase you are looking for is “Roger yourself, roundly”. ![]()
I know we have some petroleum engineers on the Board. Would I be within my rights to tell one to go frack himself?
