Do things just taste better on carpet?

Oh sweet kitty, how I love thee, but why the fuck do you take the tuna, chicken, raw beef, etc from the nice little blow I provide in the kitchen, carry it all the way to the carpet, then devour it there, leaving little bits for me to pick up? Is there something about carpet that just makes it taste better? There was little cuter than you tossing the teriyaki chicken up in the air like a dead mouse but look kitty, I rent, and even though the carpet is on it’s last leg, I would still like to avoid tuna oil stains as much as possible.

Dear MrTuffPaws,

Bite me.

Love,

The Cat

I think a better title would have been: :My Cat is a Carpetmuncher. Says the Tuna Tastes Great Down There"

Does the cat bring it closer to you when he eats? He might just want to be near you. I’ve seen dogs do that.

My ferrets do this, too. Food tastes best if carried off, even if there is no other ferret awake or around. Sometimes we use it as a method to get them out of the kitchen (Here! Take it and Go Away!).

It is similar to the vibrant bouquet of Found Water. Any Found Water (like in a puddle, or in a bathtub, or in a cup) tastes better by definition than water in a water dish. Pet owners have even found that a sick animal who won’t drink or eat will lick water if put into a tub with water drops.

Location, location, location.

My cat does that too. He eats dry & canned catfood out of the bowl, but any kind of meat has to be taken out of the bowl and eaten off the carpet. Even if I feed him outside, he’ll grab it out of the bowl, carry it over the the doormat and eat it there.

My cats do this, too. They scoop the food out of the bowl with their paw and eat it from the linoleum or the carpet. Drives us NUTS.

My one cat DOES like the taste of carpet, though - we had to get rid of his carpet scratcher because he was trying to eat it. And he gnaws on the carpet in the living room where it meets the kitchen. We call him our little rugmuncher.

E.

Mine ditto.

How about puking? They always seem to keep in their vomit until they’re on the karpet, your grandmother’s favorite cupboard, or your clean clothes.

And we thought humans invented “take-out” food.

he’s just looking to get a little more fiber in his diet.

I see that a lot with my friends’ cats, but luckily my cat has only puked once in the house. He usually is pretty polite and goes outside to upchuck in private. Bless his heart.

Yeah. Speaking of fibre, I’m having a lot of trouble teaching my own furlined that Christmas ribbon is not edible. You’d think after the third time he chundered it back up, he would have figured it out, but nooo.

Yes. Yes, they do.
Although apparently, andros’ slippers provide a piquant secondary option.

Thank goodness! I thought this was a critique of last nights “Fudgepackery” thread.

Stop serving it up with the blow.

Don’t know about the cat’s tastes, but it was an endless source of fascination for me at the last place I worked. There was a guy there who, when he dropped any sort of food on the work carpet, would dutifully pick it up and eat it. From the work carpet. God knows what’s lurking in there.

Vomiting must be better on the carpet too. At least according to our cat Fluffernutter’s behavior.

The title of this thread took my mind right into the gutter. (Well, at least it wasn’t a long trip).

In answer to the OP, used to have a dog who’d tip his food bowl right out onto the floor and eat the kibble off the floor. But then he was a Samoyed, who are not known for their deduction skills.

Dammit! don’t ask beat me to it. I was gonna say "well, that’s what you get for feeding him cocaine, doncha know that kills the appetite?

My dog does the same thing. Worse, she’s got the weirdest eating disorder I’ve ever seen. She won’t eat her regular food unles I’m home. And if she gets nervous enough, she takes the food, three or four pieces at a time, and hides them in my bed, under the couch cushions, etc.

If I give her something really juicy and yummy in her bowl, she gets ALL upset, whining at it, circling it, trying to push it over with her nose, or find something to cover it up with, then FINALLY she’ll get it out and try to take it somewhere where no one can see her (usually on the nice carpet and NOT on the linoleum).

It’s only funny the first couple dozen times, then it becomes annoying having to stalk her, and tell her “no, EAT it, don’t play with it” (after being scolded a few times, she’ll finally settle down and eat it).

But then, this is the same dog that will instantly drop a steak bone with meat still on it if someone mentions the name of her favorite toy, she’s just the WEEEist bit high strung.

Boring, serious hypothesis: maybe the bowl is too small.

I’ve read that cats take food out of the bowl to avoid scrunching up their whiskers and faces up as they eat it. Kittypoos could be pulling stuff out of the bowl for this reason, and then thinking “well, it’s outside the bowl now, so maybe I’ll eat it where I like to be.”
