what's with my cat and bread products?

my cat loves bread. if any type of bread product is left out, he will rip the package open and steal some to be eaten under the bed. just now i had to shoo him away from the package of bagels i left on the table.

i don’t think he’s hungry; his bowl was recently filled. would there be a reason that bread would attract him? is it possible that bread is the easiest thing to break into, so that’s what he goes for (or what i notice him going for)? although, if a hamburger is left out, he’ll steal the bun and not the meat.

My friends had some cats that loved potato chips, too.

My cat eats Milk Bones.

My cat does it too. He’s very weird. No, enigmatic. Cats are mysterious and enigmatic. We will never understand them, so we must stop trying.

According to a NOVA special particular cats often have PARTICULAR tastes.

The most common are plants. Many cats turn into ravenous herbavores. They just like the taste.

It seems your cat discovered a taste it likes.

It is common to other animals. Baboons for example normally don’t eat meat. But given meat to eat they then often get a taste for it and seek it out.

I have nothing to add. I’m just a sucker for cat threads.
Actually, my cat likes to lick plastic bags. I have to hide them under the sink.

I can’t answer your question either.
All I can offer is some empathy.
He will chew right throught the plastic bag and dig in.
I don’t get it either.

But then again this is the cat that loves to play in water, he’s been known to sit IN his water dish.
Go figure.

Whenever I feel like a having a cup of tea, I make one for the cat as well.

It just saves a lot of argument over who should drink my tea.

I think they just have peculiar tastes, sort of like people do. My orange tabby also eats any kind of bread…
and crackers, chinese food, cheese, popcorn, pretzels, tortilla chips, olives, carnitas, salsa, moths, crickets and at least one dead tree leaf. I know there’s more but I can’t recall it all at the moment.

He’s a bit chubby now.

My cat can smell cheese from the other end of the house. She loves it.

Abuse Angel, maybe your cat is a “carbohydrate craver”?

Is it me, or do male cats prefer plastic, while females go for paper? I have seen this with 2 brother/sister pairs. Gordo will knock over the garbage and dig out all the plastic wrap - his favorite food - while his sister would go around the house licking paper (making an annoying scraping sound in the process)… Lola used to pull photographs out of their envelopes and chew them up, while Chucky would take care of the negatives.
Anyone else seen this behavior with males/females?

“A cat isn’t fussy - just so long as you remember he likes his milk in the shallow, rose-patterned saucer and his fish on the blue plate. From which he will take it, and eat it off the floor.” – Arthur Bridges

“Mud” (aka “Your Majesty”, aka “HyperKitty”) female - definite preference for chewing plastic bags. Paper bags are for hiding in.

Fresh paper bags. My cat (male, plastic eater) quits using a bag after a few days, but will enthusiastically adopt a fresh, new bag. Even with groceries still inside.
He also licks some kinds of paper, usually the glossy stuff. Most often at 3am.

My god, I thought you were referring to some horrible Pillsbury Easy-Bake Feline product!

Don’t really have anything to add either, other than to chime in that my female, gray Tabby goes absolutely apeshit for baloney while leaving the bread alone.

I had this exact thread about my cat last month. I cannot leave a loaf of bread (or buns) on the counter or they’re ripped into and eaten in minutes.

here? cause i did a search and nothing came up.

so, i’m guessing this is just a weird cat thing with no real reasoning behind it, right?

I can’t remember where I read it (It may have been the Straight Dope) but some humans develop cravings for very peculiar things, i.e, dirt. The reasoning is that the person is lacking something in their diet and they can get it from whatever substance they are eating. In the case of dirt, I believe it was a supposed lack of minerals in the diet. I wonder if the same is possible for cats?

As a side note, my cat won’t eat anything except cat food. He won’t eat cat treats, drink milk (a good thing, as I learned with another cat), or human food. He loves tuna water, though. I mean, the water in the cans of tuna. But he won’t eat the tuna.

Aha! That’s why my older cat is ticked at me! It’s been way too long since I made tuna casserole & she got to drink the water I drained from the tuna can(s)! That explains it … Yes, one of my cats goes ape over tuna water too. Although I suspect she’d eat the tuna, if she got the chance. Oh, and for an earlier poster-my female kitten loves plastic bags. Paper bags are (as another poster put it) just places to hide in. I think she likes the noise they make almost as much as I hate it.

Don’t sweat it. I had a hell of a time finding it too.

Maybe not the exact same thread, but pretty close.
