Anne Heche, because I think her relationship with Ellen Degeneres was for publicity.
Sharon Stone, because of a comment made after she broke up with Dwight Yoakam – “He’s a dirt sandwich.” Or something like that. The word “dirt” was in there somewhere. He had nothing but nice things to say about her.
Rock Hudson, because he (reportedly) kept having unprotected sex after he knew he had AIDS, without telling his partners. If that’s not true, someone tell me because I’d like to watch Giant again.
And yes, you’re correct about Roberts/Lovett, but if memory serves (and it doesn’t a lot of the time these days), there was an agreement between the two that they’d go their separate ways even while still married.
I don’t know if De Niro’s actually dumb, but at the least he’s painfully inarticulate. Saw him on Piers Morgan the other night and to almost every question he seemed at a loss as to what he thought and seemed to struggle in trying to string six words into a sentence. Warren Beatty’s the same way though and he’s undoubtedly a pretty smart guy. He said once that he’s such a poor interview because he’s always conscious of how whatever he says can be misrepresented or misreported so he’s at pains to try to give essentially foolproof answers, the result being that he appears not to know what he thinks or how to say it if he does. Maybe De Niro’s the same way.
The way I see it if you aren’t going to watch movies, listen to music, look at paintings, read books, etc. made by dumbasses and/or assholes of one sort or another you’re going to miss out on an awful lot.
Luckily, since conservatives pretty much suck at the arts, this is not difficult. Take music, for example. All I need to do is avoid acts like Kiss, Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, Gloria Estefan and most of country. Not a problem.
He is the only one I come close to. I don’t understand the Hollywood adoration. Its not like he is a political prisoner. The fact that other than Chinatown I don’t like his movies makes it easy to avoid.
I should have said that I don’t care about someones politics or if they are an asshole or if they are a creep. It has to be something pretty bad for it to even enter my mind or effect my enjoyment. Polanski’s child rape qualifies. As does O.J.'s murders. It still won’t stop me from watching O.J. pre-murder in Naked Gun. But I can’t separate the role from him in that case. So unless you rape a child or butcher your ex-wife, I’ll still watch your movies if they are any good.
Same here. Sure he is whack-a-doodle but that is a perquisite of Hollywood isn’t it? My list is generally any actors who get involved in politics or child molesting. Now that I think about that, it is an odd pairing.
Woody Allen - I was on the fence with his movies anyway, now I can’t watch one.
Roman Polanski - Same thing. His movies that I did see weren’t so great that I would support a rapist.
Any number of other actors who are loud about their politics. I don’t necessarily boycott their movies but they interest me less. Like a store clerk who feels compelled to tell me his political opinions whenever I come in. I would avoid that store.
Jane Fonda for example - Famous only because of her dad, so she thought that made her political opinions worthwhile. I can’t see her in a film without seeing that ignorant arrogance.
If I boycotted actors/filmmakers over stuff I disagree with them about, I’d pretty much have nothing left to watch.
That said, there are some I definitely avoid more than others, but it’s usually because in addition to not liking them I don’t care for their work.
I mean, I don’t like Tom Cruise and his scientology, but I do like his acting and his movies usually entertain me, so I still occasionally will watch him.
Someone particularly vile like Roman Polanski, fuck him, I’ll never watch something that puts money in his pockets, but I wasn’t likely to watch his stuff in the first place.
I don’t have any great attraction to Jane Fonda, but nothing about that sentence makes sense. She had already won two Oscars before her father had one, so she must have had a bit of talent; I don’t see what being famous only because of her dad would have to do with her thinking her political opinions were worthwhile; and I don’t see how being the greatest actor of all time would be any more justification for it.
