I keep an assortment of soda pop (e.g., Mountain Dew, Dr Pepper) for when I’m in the mood for something between meals. Barq’s cream soda and spicy cherry are particularly good. I also like A&W root beer with chili, chili dogs, barbecued beef, and such.
REAL beer goes with stuff like pizza, wurst, and pub food.
I used to drink at least a can of Diet Dr. Pepper every day. A few years ago I stopped abruptly because I no longer can do carbonation. Now I drink water or low sugar grape Gatorade. Coffee in the am. I’m 62.
Funny, I am almost the opposite. Pop (soda) is fine; sparkling water i.e. Perrier turns me into a blimp. Although oddly enough San Pellegrino doesn’t seem to do this.
Heh. It does my heart good to read some of these replies, and know that I’m not alone.
20 years ago, it would have been a “daily, frequently” vote for me.
But like some of the other posters, with age came the intestinal difficulties caused by the carbonation. I still loooooove me a nice ice-cold coke, but now its a balance between “is the enjoyment of this coke worth more than the 20 minutes of intestinal agony later?”. Sometimes, the answer is yes, sometimes its no.
Used to drink several 12 oz cans of full sugar dark soda a day, finally managed to cut back around age 33 when I actually developed a water drinking habit for the first time in my life. I dunno if my parents failed me or if I failed myself, but I think this was the first time my thirst was ever slaked in…ever.
Was down to 1-2 cans per week until age 37 when I started taking Topamax for migraine prevention, I had fully embraced the mindset of thinking of soda as a treat rather than a lifestyle. Topamax has the effect of rendering ALL carbonated beverages (soda, sparkling water, beer) disgustingly flat, and making any sweet food and beverage taste ESPECIALLY sweet - so I quit all carbonated and super sweet drinks cold turkey and completely. I do miss them, I love juice and I would gnaw off my own arm for a Cherry Coke right about now.
:p;)i have a friend who is in her 50’s and addicted to Pepsi. Pepsi is like her: cheap, sweet, and flat. I watch her gulp it down like she’s in a desert and comes across a pitcher of water. Glug glug glug glug glug glug. ‘Waiter, please bring me another!’ Glug glug glug…then sip sip sip the rest of the meal. Drives me right up the wall. How can she DO that? she can’t drink anything else - except 8-10 cups of coffee with liquid creamer in it… doesn’t like water or any of the 200+ flavors of Polar Seltzer, or mixing that with fruit juice. Pepsi. At least a liter a day. Jesus. … Mr. Salinqmind drank 2 liters of diet Coke a day for decades. He has switched to half orange-vanilla Polar seltzer and a dash of diet coke. Ice ice cold water is acceptable. Sometimes gatorade…myself, I drink half a glass of whatever soda is put in front of me, I would rather have ice tea or plain water. Soda? - meh.- I used to love Fentimans Curiosity Cola, from England, but I can’t find it anywhere any more. It had a real old-time cola taste, almost medicinal.:o
I used to but gave it up in the last year. We are finally really buckling down on watching what we eat and cutting out sugar is a major element. I also internalized a number of the messages* about diet soda being not good for you, so that is out too.
*Mainly the one that the diet drinks trick your body into wanting more, or something like that.
Diet Coke for me (or Coke Zero). I like one in the morning for the caffeine hit. But generally that will be the only one I’ll drink during the course of a day.
Unless you count seltzer water as soda. I drink several of those each day.
It’s a weird thing. It used to be called pop here in western NY. But in the last twenty years or so, the term pop has disappeared and everyone now calls it soda.
Back in the 60’s, every secretary in the office had a can of Tab on their desk. It was all the rage, it was the chic, ‘in’ drink. Even though it has a foul bitter petrochemical taste. Funny the bad-tasting things we get hooked on! Beer, cigarettes, bitter olives and cheese and booze.
I’m 65. I’ll drink soda when I’m at a fast food restaurant because there’s nothing else worth drinking there, but that’s about it. And we just don’t do fast food very often anymore, especially now that the Firebug’s a little older, and there’s other restaurants he prefers. So I’d guess I have maybe 15-20 fast food cups of soda a year.
At home and at work, when I’m not drinking coffee, I’m drinking sweet tea that’s been sweetened with Spenda rather than sugar. Back in the early 00’s, I realized I was drinking ~500 calories a day, and if I cut that out, weight control would be a lot easier. I did, and it was. (I could drink diet sodas if there were any I liked, but there aren’t.)
I drink about 10-12 ounces of diet pop per day. It’s usually 7-Up, Sprite, or some other lemon-lime flavored diet soda. I also drink around 20 ounces of plain soda water per day. I used to have a swallowing problem and I’ve found that since I started drinking a glass of soda water before bedtime, it’s gone away.
Maybe ten servings a year, if that. I find that regular Coke is just right for sipping during a long road trip. Enough water to keep me hydrated, enough sugar to stave off hunger, and enough caffeine to keep me alert, but not too much of anything. And occasionally I drink soda after a long hike in the mountains. Otherwise almost never.
If it wasn’t making me unhealthy (and fat), I’d *love *to have a soda or two a day.
But mark me down as an “occasional diet soda person”. That’s how I weaned myself off sugary pop. On a hot summer day, I’ll swing my bike into a 7/11 and get a BigAssGulp of Vanilla Coke Zero (32 oz for 99¢, I can’t afford not to)!
But for a really special treat maybe once a month, I’ll have a Real Coke with a shot of bourbon or spiced rum. Mmmmm…
I have disliked carbonated drinks since I was a small child. They hurt the inside of my mouth and then make me burp. It’s easy for me to forgo drinking a beverage that is unhealthy in every way.
I used to drink Coke Zero almost exclusively. Then they changed the flavour and I had to transition to something else. Now I concentrate on Vanilla Coke Zero (called Coke No Sugar here for some ungodly reason) and Pepsi Max Raspberry.
I said, “socially/situationally”, because that’s when I drink soda. But I could also have said occasionally/infrequently. I probably have a can of Coke or ginger ale every other month.
I’ve taken to drinking flavored (unsweetened) Seltzer when everyone else is drinking soda. By myself, I mostly drink water, tea, and coffee. I drink strong beverages about as often as soda. Maybe a bit more as I’ll take a snifter of whiskey to bed with me when I catch cold.
I love carbonation. I drink seltzer often, and Coke Zero and Peach Fresca daily. (I also drink a big mug of coffee and a big mug of tea, black or green, daily, but of course those aren’t carbonated. No sugar in either.)
Haven’t had a sugar-soda for years—not even a sip. Don’t like it.
eta: I chose “something else” in the poll as the other questions appear to specify ‘sugar-soda’, at least going by the OP.
Ginger ale in cases of upset stomach, and only if it is convenient to pick up.
I gave up cokes (all kinds) for five years and when I took my first sip of Mountain Dew after that, I could not stand the sweetness. I had also realized the effects of drinking carbonated beverages, and as an elementary school teacher I was happy to live without the flatulence.
