Why Diet Coke?

It may be just me - but it seems like EVERYONE drinks/asks for diet coke.

WHY!

I refuse to believe that it tastes as good as normal coke, let alone better. (I personally hate it)

And any even remotely serious dieter would not be at a place that sells diet coke. most of the people who order diet coke are ordering it with some deeply un-healthy meal. It just isn’t right. It annoys me how people are prepared to choose a crap-tasting alternative for dietary purposes when any hope of losing weight is lost from the average meal ordered with the diet coke.

Or is it actually prefered for it’s taste?? (I find that hard to believe)

Diet coke? Diet Lard.
P.S this is not a serious rant. more a spark for discussion - mod - move it wherever you like.

You’re kiddin’ me, right?

When I’m at McDonald’s, you’ll see me drinking Diet Coke. And more than likely eating a grilled chicken sandwich, hold the mayo.

I drink Diet Coke because it has no calories. I prefer to eat my calories, so I stick to drinking zero calorie stuff.

Please. That’s why I’m drinking Diet Coke. So I can eat the frickin’ cheesecake, my man!

Oh, and the caffeine. Must. Have. That.

AGGGHHKKGHHH…

Diet Coke is easily the worst of Diet sodas. Now, Diet Dr. Pepper is a whole nother animal. That stuff is good.

The closest thing I can figure as to why they’d want to do something like drinking Diet Hell with something delicious and lard-filled, would be… well, umm… it sure as hell ain’t the taste. Its not the calories (what is a few hundred cals compared to the ultimate death burger and monster fries?) …

I drink diet Pepsis because I’m a pop fiend and I’m also a type II diabetic. Regular colas have massive amounts of sugars, usually a diabetic nono. mmmm… cola-riffic.

Diet Coke has no carbs.

Ick. It’s gross.

Strangely enough:

Ah, snopes has the answer to everything! (http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/newcoke.asp)

I don’t know if they’ve monkeyed with the taste since the early 80s, but at least it’s something people used to enjoy.

Drink Diet coke for the health? why not drink water then?

for the caffeine? sugar free coffee - much nicer?

Pure orange - Mcd sells that.
Or you like it? - then taste is surely in the mouth of the devourer. heck - people like LIVER! that proves it!

I prefer Diet Pepsi. I drink diet sodas (and Diet iced teas) because I hate hate hate the taste and mouthfeel of corn syrup and sodas are loaded with them. It grosses me out.

I actually prefer the taste of Diet Coke to regular Coke. Regular soda is way too sweet.

Besides, with the amount I drink I’d be 400 pounds in a week. Do you know how many calories are in a soda?

And, why wouldn’t someone watching their diet be in a place that serves it? I eat fast food/pizza once or twice a month – is that going to kill me? It is possible that some of those people you’ve observed eating the deeply unhealthy meal are getting their once in a while treat. (Although I must admit sometimes I cringe while ordering, it does seem kind of weird, “I’d like a single with everything, large fries, and a diet coke”

Lobsang, water don’t bubble (usually) and coffee isn’t that good cold.
Diet soda = deee-lite-full!

shamrock227 well diciplined people (you), and people for whom a fast-food meal is a reward or treat are in the minority. I can understand the given reasons why people drink Diet coke. I just can’t understand how it is so god-damn popular?

I may be biassed though(I hate the stuff).

I do too. If they made a caffinated Calistoga-ish sparkiling mineral water… mmmm… and put it in normal fast food joints. I’d be all over that.

I drink it for the taste. I love the stuff. Heck, I even love the one with lemon, so there must be something wrong with me. I don’t even think about the fact that it’s diet, just that it tastes good.

Because “real” coke is… thick. So for those of us who grew up around the diet stuff [whether we prefer pepsi or coke], the real stuff is gross. Really. It’s thick, and too sweet, and you need something to rinse it down with!

Dr. Pepper tastes like carbonated cough syrup.

That sounds like a good thing to me.

Lobsang, you’ve got some odd food obsessions. Anything you want to get off your chest?

I love diet Coke. Just for the taste of it! (and for the caffiene) I do prefer the taste over that of other sodas, and I never picked up the coffee habit.

I don’t like Diet Coke, I like Diet Pepsi. But most places don’t serve Pepsi, they serve Coke, so I’ll ask for a Diet Coke instead.

Why? Because I honestly do not like regular pop. It’s thick and syrupy and sticky and grossly sweet. Erika put it nicely: you need to rinse out your mouth after you drink it. Plus, I’m a serious caffeine addict but I don’t like the taste of coffee very much (it’ll do in a pinch, but still). And with the amount of pop I drink in a day, I’d gain a billion pounds in no time. (and yes, I do drink tea, but I’m not gonna be in classes all day, brewing tea during a lecture ;))

Diet Coke is sweeter. I find pepsi, or diet pepsi for that matter, to taste kind of… metallic.

I’m with Erika on this one; for those of us who grew up drinking diet cola, regular cola just tastes…off. Plus, it’s too damned sugary. It has nothing to do with dieting or anything like that; I honestly like the taste. And, no, water and/or coffee are not appropriate substitutes. I can’t stand the taste of coffee, and water has NO fizz or flavor. Blahness.

Funny story–when I went to Cedar Point a couple of years ago with my then-boyfriend, we stood in line for Millenium Force for over an hour with no drinks. By the time we got out, we were dead thirsty, and my mom–who had decided not to ride–had gotten each of us a regular Pepsi. The vendor she’d gone to had been out of Diet Pepsi.

I opened it, took one gulp to keep me from totally passing out, then gave it back to my mom. I would rather be dead thirsty than drink regular cola, especially from a can/plastic bottle without ice. It’s just that gross to me.

Incidentally, my ex ended up forcing me to drink it so I wouldn’t pass out. I may have bitched about the guy, but he did have some redeeming qualities :).
