Do you eat cole slaw on hot dogs?

My wife is from West Virginia. Everyone where she lives eats cole slaw on hot dogs. She made me try it and frankly, it’s disgusting.

She seems to think that most people do this. I, on the other hand, have never met anyone outside of her family that does it.

So, what I want to know is, where in the country (ok, let’s make it the world, this is the World Wide Web after all) do people eat cole slaw on hot dogs?

Disgusting? Disgusting? I don’t even know if I should dignify that with a reply.

I eat cole slaw on hot dogs whenever possible. Makes both taste better. I prefer chili if it’s available, but slaw’s my second choice. Best slaw dogs in the world (best any dogs for that matter) are from The Varsity in Atlanta, Georgia. (I’m from the suburbs of Atlanta).

I don’t think I’ve ever tried it, but it doesn’t sound disgusting. Cole slaw on a cold sandwich, especially roast beef, is pretty good.

What you don’t eat cole slaw on your hot dogs? Where have you been living? Eastern Ky eats cole slaw on hot dogs. I’m inclined to agree with your wife thinking most people do this. Of course we think your the odd man out.

Hmmm… If no kraut were available and I were really jonesing for cabbage on my frank, maybe…

No. I’d keep it on the side in the unlikely event I ever ordered it. West Virginians are deviants, and this is further proof.

I guess I should say that I find cole slaw disgusting in general. That could bias my feelings of it on a hot dog. There are very few things made with mayo that I can eat.

Actually, my wife eats both chili and cole slaw on her hot dog. Down at the Diary Queen near her parents’ house, if you order a chili dog with everything, it will come with cole slaw on.

Glad I opted for the hamburger.

Out here on the West Coast, I had never heard of cole slaw on hot dogs until a year or two ago. I think it’s a regional thing. Like my Dad, who is from Detroit, believes the worst thing you could do to a hot dog is put ketchup on it. That’s just the way it was when he grew up there.

I love cole slaw but can’t imagine it on a hot dog. I love to put mustard, relish, onions and ketchup (my Dad is probably shuddering right now) on mine so there isn’t much room for anything else.

Cole Slaw on a hot dog? I just puked, thanks.

Nope, though it sounds like what my brother MIGHT do… he put Triscuits and bubble tea pearls in a hot dog once at a BBQ a couple summers ago.

Personally, I prefer my coleslaw on a doner kebab.

Tikki…

I live in the Detroit area and have most of my life.

Many people put ketchup on their hot dogs out here. Me included.

Now my dad wouldn’t do it either but he won’t put ketchup on anything.

I’ve never tried it, but it might be good - particularly if we’re talking about a vinegary cole slaw. The commercial standard, globs-of-mayo-with-veggies would be too heavy, but cole slaw is different things to different people.

You can get shrimp salad on your 'dogs here in Norway. Now that is insane.

Well, I enjoy cole slaw on a nice pork barbecue sandwich, but on a hot dog? I’ve never heard of such a thing, and it sounds kinda disgusting to me. Then again, pineapple pizza sounded disgusting to me until I tried it, so, who knows?

In this case, I think I’d order one. . .without the hot dog!

There’s a fast food chain in my area (Sandy’s Hot Dogs) that specialized in, duh, hot dogs. I remember an article in the local paper some years ago that said something to the effect, “Even though Sandy’s touts their slaw dogs, a survey found that most people in this area do not like slaw on their hot dog.”

One of their other popular sandwiches is their barbeque, which also has slaw.

I like cole slaw as long as it’s not “sweet.” But it’s not something I care for on a sandwich–maybe because most of the restaurant/fast food style cole slaw I’ve found is generally sweet.

Why am I reminded of Hank’s Ass ?

No, I’ve never tried coleslaw on hot dogs–I had one this morning, and as usual, put mustard and tomato relish in it.

Nope…

dog won’t hold still long enough… and he’s freakin HUGE thats a LOT of coleslaw

I thought that was solely a Deep South thing, particularly a South Carolina one. You call it a “slaw dog”.

I don’t remember getting them at the Varsity, though. I went to school in Atlanta, but I was more about the onion rings. Mmmm. Step right up, step right up, get your money in your hand and your order on your mind!

HELL YES! I’m sorry…I cant understand how anyone could eat a hot dog w/o coleslaw and mustard.

I also like dill pickle slices with my catfish.

Funny, I just had some hot dogs with slaw (among other things) on them for lunch!

They came from Arbetter’s Hot Dogs, a real institution here in Miami, Florida, where they are actually called “West Virginia Dogs”! They have mustard, onions, chili, and cole slaw. Personally, I love how the spicy, beanless chili and the cool, creamy slaw work well together on the hot dog. I understand how it might seem off-putting to some, but I think ketchup on hot dogs is gross.

I don’t like cole slaw.

So the answer would be, no.
