chow chow? Goes w/ lots of stuff but is best with purple hull peas and cornbread.
cole slaw on hot dogs? have never seen it here, but i like both so i’ll try it.
isn’t chow chow a dog (literally)?
vivalostwages where do you get chow chow at? We haven’t seen any up here in years. Wonder how much it would cost to ship some…?
Odin, you have to remember that my Dad grew up in Detroit in the '30’s and '40’s. No doubt the city has become more sophisticated in it’s later years and ketchup has become an accepted hot dog topping.
Hmmm… could be.
I’ll have to query my more advanced relatives and find out how they grew up.
I was born and raised in West Virginia, and hot dogs with chili and slaw were a staple.
Imagine my dismay when I came to central Kentucky for college, only to discover that not only did they not offer slaw for your hotdogs. If you asked for it, they looked at you if you were crazy. I had friends from eastern Kentucky with the same problem.
I knew that they didn’t eat slaw on their hotdogs everywhere, but whenever we visited my grandparents in Myrtle Beach, SC (jokingly known as the capital of West Virginia), they had slaw aplenty for your frankfurter.
I also eat slaw on barbeque sandwiches. Mmm. Is it lunch yet?
I like slaw. I like hot dogs. I like BBQ. Never the three shall meet.
As far as I am concerned, there are three ways to eat a hot dog
-
Chili Dog - Chili, cheese, and onions
-
Kraut Dog - Kraut, brown mustard
-
Ballpark style - ketchup, brown mustard, relish, onions
Slaw is a side dish and should be kept as such.
On barbecue? You bet.
On a hot dog? No, thanks. You can get a damned good hot dog, with onions and Hungarian chili, at the William Street Recreation Center in Fredericksburg. Add an ice cold beer (or two, or ten) and you’re talking good eats.
Out of curiosity, what exactly is Hungarian chili?
I just order it from www.vermontcountrystore.com. I don’t know if it’s even sold around here. I get Muffaletta from them too, because the ones sold here just don’t cut it.
A hot dog all the way consists of…
bun
dog
mustard
catsup
onions
chili
**bbq[/q] slaw.
cole slaw is for eating on bliffenburgers.
So, I told fella bilong missus flodnak about this thread, and he said, quite sensibly: “Why don’t you make one and try it out?” Where food is concerned, he is ever the pragmatist.
This morning I made a batch of vinegary cole slaw and put it in the fridge to marinate until suppertime. I ate it on a hot dog for supper. The hot dog was also topped with relish and fried onions.
It was good. Actually damn good. I ate a second hot dog the same way just to be sure. I think we will be having cole slaw with our hot dogs much more often here at Casaflodnak.
I trust this settles the matter
