No, I’ve lived long enough to know my own tastes. ( Now all my grocery money goes towards buying food I know I won’t like for the other family members - like hamburger. Ick! Looking at that brownish gray sludge poaching in its own grease…not for me!) I do get cravings sometimes for childhood foods that I didn’t particularly like at the time, but that I feel nostalgic for now. Like raisin biscuits? They were commercially packaged flat, glazed, sweet-ish crackers with a bland filling of chopped raisins. We ate them with milk at grandma’s years ago, and though they weren’t bad, they weren’t good. I’d like some now, but they disappeared off the grocery shelves and are only available online, or at Vermont Country Store.
I’m about the least picky person you’ll meet, so there is not all that many things I dislike enough to avoid…but there is one thing:
Durian. I like the way it looks, how it smells, and the initial taste…which soon becomes overwhelming and it is all I can do to choke it down. I keep thinking it will grow on me, but not happening.
I know for a fact that I dislike the Taco Bell special flavor Mountain Dew Baja Blast. It’s nasty, tasting somewhat akin to what I imagine the inside of a AA battery tastes like. But for some reason, on the rare occasions I’m at Taco Bell, I’ll have it anyway. I have no idea why.
I repeatedly order something that I never like and have asked my wife to remind me if I try to order it again. It’s weird. While I recall having the conversation, I have no idea what the food specifically is. That’s ok. She knows.
Brown rice.
I keep trying it because it is said to be so healthful, and is said to be a great substitue for white rice, which I love. It isn’t. It is nasty.
I actually use this as a strategy. I’ve actually gotten to the point where I’ll buy bad tasting soda, so I won’t wind up drinking it all up. I’ve got some horrible tasting instant chicken alfredo that I keep around to keep around, just in case I run out of food.
You see, my desire not to waste food overrides my hatred for the taste.
Has anyone posted yet saying something they tried and DID like?
I tried blueberries. I like them now.
I think I see your problem here. A mango should be soft and juicy and taste nothing like cinnamon. I have no idea what you ate, but it was either very unripe or something else entirely. Also, don’t eat the skin, if you tried that.
Blech, you did eat the capers with something else right? I don’t think anyone likes the taste of capers alone…
This doesn’t quite fit the pattern of the thread, but I did buy something that I was pretty sure I wouldn’t like. The flax powder I picked up the other day advertised that it “blends in to your favorite foods without affecting the flavor.” When the fact that you can’t taste it is a selling point, you know that can’t be good.
Problem with mangos is that they are a ripoff. After removing the skin and cutting the flesh from the pit you end up with a couple of slivers of edible flesh. Maybe 5 % (weight) of the fruit ends up being edible. And it is expensive.
I always regret buying mango. It is a ripoff compared to other fruits.

Hey, more for me, but if all you can get is a couple of slivers, I think someone needs to teach you how to eat a mango. Then again, I’m spoiled by living in Florida, where I can get soft, ripe mangoes for fairly cheap in the summer.
I’ve always stressed to my kids that they can’t tell if they like something until they’ve tried it. We were at a fancy restaurant and our server mentioned that there was only one serving of calf/lamb brains left. My kids immediately told her that their dad would take them, and I couldn’t back down.
They were awful. Texture/taste/visual appeal all were against them. But I ate them. Never again.
No, I’m not a zombie, but I absolutely adore brain. It’s incredibly difficult to find after all the mad cow hysteria a few years ago, but it’s an absolute treat when I can find it. I’ll eat it prepared just about any possible way.
Candy containing white chocolate. I don’t like white chocolate.
But I recently bought a bag of Candy Cane Kisses, knowing full well that they were 90% white chocolate with a bit of peppermint candy mixed in.
They tasted like I expected them to, so I gave most of them away.
(The mint truffle kisses that I gave away, on the other hand, were because I’m a nice person. And because I’m plenty fat enough without eating the whole bag myself.)
I like the skin just fine.
Not as good as the flesh, of course, but it’s better than eating potato skins. And with the proper method of peeling, you get plenty of flesh.
This is the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title. Durians are something I will get again in the future, but I have never been able to finish more than 10% of any durian-based product. I got a durian bubble tea this summer and carried it around with me for an hour before giving up and throwing it away. I can’t imagine anyone enjoying that flavor.
As a related topic, here is a sign I’d like to put outside my cubicle.
Fresh peaches and figs, once in a while. I’m still convinced that they have to be eaten off the tree in order to be any good, not shipped while still unripe.
I also buy imported strawberries in late May-beginning of June, even though I know I will always prefer the Finnish-grown ones, which come into market about a month later. I’ll grant you they’re smaller and don’t look as perfect, but my God, the flavour.)
Also, the American blueberry vs. the European bilberry. I still want to plant blueberry as soon as I have a garden, even though bilberries are juicier and sweeter.
