Do you feel bad when you get something for nothing?

I just got $25 from the ING on-line bank.
They sent me junk mail offer, I don’t know why, to open a savings account on-line.
I would have to transfer money in from my online checking account at another bank, which I did to the tune of $10.
Then they added $25 and after it sat there two weeks I was allowed to transfer all $35 back to my regular online checking.

I don’t have a need for savings accounts, since my checking pays interest. So a savings account would really be inconvenient for me. I’ll undoubtedly never use it again.

I guess I just did it because most of these “deals” have burned me, with hidden fees or the service was not as advertised. So it was supposed to feel good to win one after all, but I feel guilty.

This morning, I stopped by the canteen in a building where I pick up and drop off interoffice mail on a regular basis and got a bottle of Dutch chocolate milk. I’m not entirely sure what happened on the rack, but the impact of the bottle I’d bought hitting the bottom of the pick-up rack knocked another one loose, so I got two bottles for the price of one.

Did I feel bad? Not one whit. Well, my stomach wasn’t entirely happy with me shortly afterward, but it was well worth it.

I always throw those things away. I don’t mind something for nothing, but if I can’t put it in my pocket, I’m wary of it. I don’t like all that transferring around.

When I say I like “something for nothing”, it must be strictly on the up-and-up. I will not steal, bullshit, or bamboozle to get free stuff.

But hey, if I find a $20 bill and there’s no one around, I’m keeping it.

I never feel bad about getting something for nothing. Its karma, so many times I got nothing for something, the universe owes me big time.

Two weeks ago, I was coming out of the hardware store, near a bus stop and found $11 on the ground. I stood around for three or four minutes trying to see who might have dropped it. Since I couldn’t find anyone, I took it to a local grocery store. They have pre-packaged bags of groceries for the local food shelves for $5 each. I bought two and felt much better about things.

I am not sure it was guilt, but I felt there are others who could use this money more than me.
