The WGN Morning News is definitely on the cheeky side, and it gets sillier as the morning goes on, particulary in the last hour (9-10am). If you watch their first hour or two (4am-6am), they play it pretty straight – or, at least, straigher than they play it later in the morning.
If Mr.Wrekker’s at home he goes straight to the local ABC affiliate in the kitchen while he eats breakfast.
If I’m alone I avoid turning the TV on as long as I can. Then I go straight to TCM.
The cable news channels just ruin my outlook on life. So I avoid them.
WGN sounds fun.
One used to be able to watch WGN outside of Chicago; it was one of the “superstations” in the 1970s and 1980s – local TV stations which also put their programming feeds on satellite and made them available to cable companies nationwide.
However, the “satellite version” of WGN (now called WGN America) started to diverge from the Chicago version, as WGN started airing more programming for which they didn’t have satellite/cable rights. As of, I think, 2014, WGN America shares no programming with WGN; I think that the morning news show was the last thing that got removed.
While I’m getting ready for work, I watch (listen) to either The Today Show or Good Morning America. I also record The Jason Show (Jason Mathison) which comes on at some point after I’ve left for work and watch it while I eat dinner. It’s out of Minneapolis/St. Paul. I love it because it’s just fun entertainment (NO politics!) and is Minnesota based.
I used to watch The Today Show back when Katie Couric, Al Roker, and Matt Lauer were there. It wasn’t anything brilliant but I usually caught the news briefs with Ann Curry and watched a little. Once Merideth Viera and Kathie Lee came on board the show got so banal I couldn’t take it any more.
