Do you have an alibi?

“Here you go officer. This is my COVID tracking app, which shows exactly where I was at the time in question. Since at that very time, I was getting swabbed for a COVID antibody test, I’m good.”

You should meet my landlord.

My wife can attest that I was at home 7:30-9:30 PM on Monday, January 24th.

Which is suspicious. If I didn’t have an alibi, that’s proof that I’m innocent. Were I not innocent, I’d have an alibi.

My wife was home nursing an injury, and I was home nursing her.

My wife, daughter, and I are each other’s alibis.

Our phone’s location histories will support that claim.

I live alone. My browser history shows I visited several websites during that period. My journal entry from that day is also time-stamped for 9:01 PM. Maybe not the end of the world for me.

But you’re under the assumption that people can only use their computers in one spot.

You could’ve done your browsing and journaling on a laptop… maybe at a coffee shop… the one right down the street from… your victim!
(Did that Law & Order sound effect come in right then? I heard it.)

I was home. Our Arlo cameras would show me entering the home prior and not leaving until after. Mrs. L will tell you though (selling me out!) that our cameras’ motion detectors don’t always trip.

Or…are we omitting something, files we deleted from Arlo’s cloud to cover the crime? I guess you could talk to the Arlo people to see how long they save them.

AIUI one common way to prove something is true is to prove every alternate explanation is false. That’s hard to do. What if Arlo didn’t record me going out the front or back door because I climbed over the back yard fence? What if I had a helicopter pad on the roof? What if I tunneled out?

It’s funny 'cause I’ve been re-listening to that Serial podcast about the murder of Hae Min Lee by Adnan Syed in 1999. The matter of Syed’s alibi during the murder figures heavily.

I was at work until about 9:05pm then driving home. It would be difficult for me to prove where I was after 9:05.

I was with my lovely wife, and doubtless fiddling around on my phone or online, so there is a record of my internet usage, perhaps even on this very message board.

I’m doomed.

I’m sure the Siamese called in a tipline crime buster thingy, on me.
I doubt they even requested anonymity.
Real jerks, they are.

Ha!
I was at home all that time, playing Civilisation 5 across the Internet (using Steam) with my mate.

In game, raiding - was on a vid chatting app, and my phone was at home. So game logs, my vid file, my friend as an alibi, my fellow guildies on the raid and the husband will work.

Whether or not you have an alibi, you should at least temporarily stop loading boxes into the delivery truck or washing and drying bar glasses and give the detectives your full undivided attention.

Me, I hardly leave the house anymore, have a wife and two kids, so I’m seldom in the house alone. So I would have an alibi, such as it is.I don’t know how much stock the cops would put in the word of a family member who could be covering for me (my wife might cover for me, but my teenage kids would sell me down the river in a minute).

Someone finally murdered Judy? I’m not surprised. Nope, I was in bed by 7:30. No alibi. Sign me up as a suspect.

I was probably at Lowe’s getting supplies, so I’d be on their cameras.

At least it seems like that’s how I spend most of my free time these days.

Dropped the kids off at kendo. Went back home and washed dishes. etc. My wife was also home. Then I went and picked up the kids and came back.

Cell phone tower records would verify the movement of my cell phone and my therapist would testify that my cell phone addiction is such that even a planned murder wouldn’t be sufficient reason for me to be separated for long enough to commit a crime.

I was with Jerry… oh wait, he was the one that was murdered… I haven’t seen Jerry in weeks.

Yes, but is it worth showing your browsing history just to beat a murder rap?

I was home with my wife recovering from having my pacemaker replaced that morning. Unfortunately, I was out of the hospital by 10AM. Still not a propitious time to go out and murder someone.
