I believe it does, yes. I think it only applies to posts, not thread headings. So you wouldn’t be able to avoid the username in that event.
I do, and I really like it. I realised that 95% of the posts that I would get really aggravated about were coming from 2 posters. Eliminated the issue. If I were a GD or GQ poster it might matter more, but frankly, I’m here for fun. They were intruding on my fun by being butt heads, now they aren’t. Life is good.
Thread titles should appear just like normal, only the text of the OP will be blanked out. I’m not sure if individual message titles are affected or not.
cazzle, that’s exactly it! I tried it once with a poster who isn’t around anymore.
I found myself clicking on all the damn posts anyway, thus defeating the purpose. Now, if there’s someone who bugs me (and there really isn’t anyone who’s THAT annoying to me that I can’t even bother to read them) I’d just skip reading it.

I have exactly one person on my ignore list. S/he is a member (or guest if s/he didn’t pay) in perfectly good standing, and has probably never been pitted, at least AFAIK.
But s/he simply annoyed the living CRAP out of me with the comments s/he made, even though they were literate and non-polemic. Also the user had an amazing propensity to read the same kinds of threads I like to read, but always be among the first few to reply with a post that would more often then not grate on my skin.
There are a couple posts I’d like to ignore myself over.
My list’s always been empty though.
No, there’s only been one or two posters that I intentionally tried to avoid and that was easy enough without resorting to mechanical means. My eyes have perfected to ability to glaze over immediately with the appropriate provocation.

You can still read the ignored poster’s words when they’re quoted by a third party. Which sort of defeats at least part of the point.
I think I may end up not bothering with it. I should be able to just glide over posts that I think are going to really annoy me, or try not to be annoyed in the first place.
I’ve had two people on my IGNORE list during my tenure here. One because the poster seemed to take an irrational dislike to me from pretty much the moment I started posting and every time we’d end up in a thread together it would quickly degenerate into sniping. The person was something of a one trick pony and it finally got to the point where I decided I had to be the one to stop dealing with it. I haven’t seen a post under the person’s name for a long time (over a year) so I don’t know if we’ve somehow managed to stop crossing paths or if he’s no longer posting. The other because we kept getting into little dustups and I got sick of it. I finally ended up taking him off the list because our interests overlap sufficiently that I was constantly reading his ignored posts anyway and the board ran so slowly that trying to read them took too long.
I think as long as no one mentions ANYONE by name, this thread might be okay.

I don’t have anyone on my ignore list. There are a very few posters I do tend to ignore if they start a thread, but mostly their thread topics are not interesting to me anyway. I don’t tend to read who a post is coming from unless I really like it or it really pisses me off.
What happens if you put someone on your buddy list? Anything?

Also, it would interrupt the flow of threads and that would get real annoying real fast.
I have a new account, but I’ve lurked long enough to get to know a few folks here. I can’t see the point in ignoring anyone–if you don’t like their point of view, skip over their posts. As has been mentioned, people change and even if they don’t even an idiot can put out something thought-provoking. And who, in the conquest of ignorance, would wanna miss that?
I think it would be cool if the ignored person received a one-time message, “You have been ignored” when someone (who remains anonymous) activates this function. *Sometimes *obnoxious people don’t know they’re being offensive. This would be a nice little self-help tool–In real life, you can tell when you’re being ignored and can adjust your actions accordingly. Here, you don’t have those opportunities to improve.

I once had this fantastic idea about the ignore list (although the thread that I started with the idea was locked (and in retrospect I can see why, as we would all have to be a lot more mature before implementing my idea would be feasible)).
Anyway, my though was this: What is under our post count we had an “ignored by” count? I realize that if we did this the poor mods would probably have their inboxes filled by people trying to find out who is ignoring them, but I though that it would be similar to the reliability rating a la David Brin’s Earth.
But I like the reliability rating idea. I wonder if we could come up with a formula based on number of posters ignoring you, times officially warned and so on.
I can’t read, so the “Ignore” feature is kinda redundant for me.

I’ve tried it a time or two, but then people started replying to that poster, so I’d have to read their posts anyway to see what people were talking about. So I was reading the person’s posts anyway and it was taking twice as long. So I un-ignored.
Nah… it’d be boring if people I disagreed with didn’t get their side of the debate in… How would I figure out what the opposite extreme of politics is doing/thinking? How would I form arguments against them?
Those that are total jerks disappear long before they become a recurring problem.

I’d never put anyone on ignore. I’d miss too much.
