Question 17 in Lobsang’sthread got me thinking about, well, my coveted useless things.
My answer can be seen in thread but I would like to tell you about my second most coveted useless thing.
It is a hockey jersey. A standard black mesh jersey with a Canada logo on it. Normally a jersey like this would just be discarded but the real value comes in how I came to possess it.
We were at a hockey tournament playing in the finals. The prize money was really good so teams had come from all over to get their hands on the purse. All but two had left in dissappointment and both teams were stacked with some great talent. Both teams had 7 or 8 current and ex-professional players. I won’t bore you with game details (truth be told, my personality is such that I only remember hockey moments if I get scored on. I don’t remember saves I make.), but the final tally was 2-0 for us in a great wide-open game. As we are shaking hands, one of the opposing players grabs me and tells me how great I played and that I deserved to wear this more than he did and, with that, took off his jersey in the middle of the rink and gave it to me.
I have not worn that jersey. It is the better than any trophy I have ever received.
So, as this is in IMHO, does anyone else have a story where you were rewarded with something unconventional?
It occurs to me that I’ve never won a trophy in my life.
I won an easter egg in maths by producing the best ‘report’ about dogfood ( :dubious: ). And I’ve won a few 100% attendance certificates, and even a degree certificate. But not a single shiny metal trophy or medal in my whole life.
It’s one of the things I regret - never taking an interest in sport when I was younger. I wish I’d attempted to join teams in Cricket, Football (soccer), and had tried certain events at sports day (Discus, Javelin).
My maths teacher was unconventional. It was a looooong time ago, but I think the intention was to learn the financial (and therefore mathematical) side of looking after a pet.
If only my other teachers had offered me chocolate in exchange for academic achievement!!
I’ve got a bunch of actual ‘trophy’ trophies, mostly from elementary school sports and academics.
Possibly one of my most valuable possesions is a box filled with pine boards, broken in half - all of the boards I’ve broken at various belt testings in tae kwon do. To me, those boards represent everything that’s had the potential to make me give up and quit training.
I’ve only ever won one trophy, as part of a math contest in Junior High. The part I participated in was a two-person section where you each did half a test, then traded, hoping that between the two you could get more right. Our pair won, and the team won the entire contest. I just like it because the trophy says nothing about math; it simply states that I won it for “Leapfrog”.
