Do you keep 'emergency' clothes at work? What, specifically, do you have?

(inspired by this thread)

Quite some time ago I decided it would be prudent of me to keep an entire spare set of clothing at work, just in case. You never know when you’re gonna spill grape juice on your belly, split your inseam, or shart your pants. Or wear a pair of unmatched shoes (I’m actually slightly concerned about this).

So, what do you keep on hand, clothing-wise?

As for me, nothing right now. I’ve been too lazy.

And I suspect I just jinxed myself.

The only thing I keep in my desk is a lightweight cardigan. I tend to get chilly when I’m just sitting at the computer all day, even in summer. Not exactly an emergency, but definitely necessary for my comfort.

Not at work but in my car: pair of thick denim pants, socks and boots, t-shirt, long-sleeved shirt, & sweater, and two pair of underwear and a sports bra. Also a pair of tights and of knee-highs, and a packet of feminine pads, but those last are for car accidents rather than clothing accidents.

My husband works in a machine shop with heavy dirty equipment and things that really destroy clothes (welders) but he’s also the shop foreman so he has a set of ‘business casual’ clothes and shoes (button-down seersucker or linen shirt, chinos, dress socks) in his office in case a client stops by or he has to go meet with vendors or whatever. My main difficulty is that he often forgets (or an emergency comes up) to change back OUT of the nice clothes before he goes back into the shop again, thus defeating the purpose of him saving the nice clothes in the first place.

Most of the shoes that I wear at work live under my desk, so I can commute in comfy footwear and not have to schlep additional shoes around.

We have to wear slip-resistant shoes, so I keep an extra pair in my locker in case I absently come in wearing flip flops or something. Actually, there was an instance where a patient was being released and it turned out her only pair of shoes had been lost somewhere between her wrecked car and the ambulance. She was roughly my size, so she went home wearing a pair of foamy black slip-resistant clogs. Oh, and socks, I have socks, too.

Maybe I should have. One winter day I forgot to put on a shirt over my T-shirt, and it was a pretty ratty T-shirt too. I’m often dressed and don’t leave for work for an hour or more to avoid traffic so I put a good shirt on last. This time I just bundled myself up in coat, scarf and hat and headed out the door without realizing I hadn’t taken that last step… I didn’t notice until I got to work. There is a hotel with a gift shop just a couple of blocks away so I went and got a pull-over shirt there which was good enough for our fairly casual dress code. I probably ought to leave a dress shirt there in case I get called into a meeting when I’m just wearing something casual, or if I forget to put a shirt on again.

Just make sure you always put your underwear on under your pants, and you’ll be fine.

I had a friend years ago who was a big fancy-schmancy executive and he came to work one time wearing two different shoes. The bad thing was that one was a slip-on and the other one had shoelaces.

I do, but that’s just in case I decide to ride my road bike to work (it doesn’t have mounts for panniers).

I tend to dress fairly casually for work, but I keep a black blazer hanging in my office. If I’m giving a presentation or something I’ll usually come into work wearing my usual cardigan and then change into the blazer when I need it. And if there’s some event that I forgot about, I can quickly make myself look a bit more formal.

I just remembered that I also have some gym clothes in the office, so if I got caught in a rainstorm or something I could change into those. But they’re not there for that purpose, they’re there because several months ago I thought that if I just kept some gym clothes at work then I’d go to the gym more often. (I was wrong.)

I do!

I have a pair of shorts, underwear, and a tee shirt.

I often get covered in water, mud, paint, glue, or shaving cream. I occasionally get peed on or (shudder) barfed on.

Can you guess my profession?

Formal business wear. Suit, white shirt, tie. You can always take off the jacket, lose the tie and roll up your sleeves. You can’t make a hoodie and board shorts into a suit…YMMV

Extra underwear. I have a medical condition that makes having a spare a good idea.

I have a tee-shirt, socks and underwear in my work bag. I wear gym gear in to the city, and then dress for work after the pool/gym. The spare stuff is for anything I forget.

I only forgot a pair of work trousers once, many years ago, after an early morning open water swim. I at least had some running shorts to wear in the office until the local Tesco opened, and I got a cheap new pair of work trews.

If I did the same now I’d get away with the running/gym shorts for the day, I work in remote support and no customers see me.

Ties, Gown, a white dress shirt.

Does my gym bag count?

No. If there is an emergency where I would need a new shirt or tie or anything, there are any number of men’s clothing stores within walking distance.

I don’t expect to shit myself or get to work and realize I’m wearing shoes that don’t match since I’m not a five year old.

Normal workday attire for me is jeans, sneakers and some sort of knit shirt, never anything formal. I am frequently climbing ladders into cockpits, or crawling around on dirty floors hooking up lab equipment, so it’s common for me to be disheveled and dirty. I keep a spare shirt in my truck in case of a bad spill or stain, and a spare coat hanging by my desk (in case of sudden weather change).

And you just jinxed yourself. Enjoy your shitstain.

I’m catching up on the Lethal Weapon TV show (I’m liking it), and the one I watched last night covered this! Our heroes got all wet, and back at the precinct Riggs was a mess and Murtagh was fine. Riggs asked him if he kept a clean set of clothes at the office, and Murtagh said he had five. A nice answer to the question of why TV characters in general always seem to be dressed in clean clothes at inappropriate times.

The captain also has spare clothes. Riggs as written in the show may not own a second set of clothes, so he isn’t going to be able to follow suit.

I got a sweater for my office because it was frequently too cold. But then I discovered it was handy for coverup/replacement purposes for when I inevitably would get a ink stain on my shirt.

So I kept it around as I moved despite not really needing it for warmth. (And my last office was generally too hot.)

I have a Superman outfit which I keep in a locked drawer at my news desk.

Oops, I’ve said too much…
