Do you like Alex Trebek as host of Jeopardy?

Who?

I’m not so sure about this boob jiggling thing. Isn’t it possible he made that crack because she said “what is” without finishing the sentence?

I used to watch Jeopardy nightly and thought Trebek was fine. I even enjoyed his haughty condescension. I don’t remember any overt sexism but it’s possible that I missed it. Is that a widely accepted view? Any examples?

Trebek is an insufferable asshole. The sooner he is gone, the better.

The examples are what you see here and the retirement thread. He calls a woman 50 years his junior a “young lady” and this bizarre boob ogling accusation.

I only have the vaguest memory of Art Fleming so for me, Alex * is * Jeopardy. Sure, he’s condescending and smug and I love to hate his over pronunciation of foreign words and names, but that’s just all part of his “Alexness”. I didn’t give him a 10 because he does occasionally get down right unkind to guests. Also, from what I’ve heard he very much does not appreciate SNL’s Jeopardy satire so no sense of humor about himself.
I won’t quit watching once he leaves but I’m having a hard time envisioning the show without him.

I don’t remember Art Fleming, who hosted the original version of Jeopardy (1964-1979). Although I was ten years old when it went off the air, it aired during the daytime when I would have been in school. There was also briefly a nighttime version that he hosted but I was too young to remember that. I have seen a couple of episodes on You Tube. Here’s one: - YouTube From what I’ve seen, I like him better than Trebek.

I like him a lot, but he’s 78 years old. If he wants to retire, he should do so.

Everybody seems to be focusing on the off-the-cuff banter of various hosts. I don’t think they get enough credit for the ability to manage a game and a broadcast simultaneously. Alex, first and foremost, has to keep the game moving; reading the clues, reminding the players whose turn it is to select (if they seem unsure), occasionally announcing the score, etc. That stuff doesn’t just happen, but the good hosts make it look like it does. If I had to do all that in real time, with cameras running, I don’t know if I’d have any mental cycles left to be witty and charming.

I gave him an eight for mostly being a good host and making it look easy, but 2 point subtracted for occasional lapses into smugness and condescension. And for thinking he is the reason people watch. I cringe when he makes a contestant’s story become about him, but he doesn’t do it all the time. I realize it’s difficult to do the same thing for all these years and keep it fresh.

I gave him a 9. I think he does a great job.

Why do people think Trebek fancies himself the reason people watch?
