I would think that would be the case during high tide as well.
mmm
whoops! I meant 50 meters!
I live in Florida and I’ve never gone to a saltwater beach* just to go to the beach on my own initiative. Usually when I tag along with people I would have had a better time elsewhere and so I have only gone a handful of times in my adult life.
Sometimes when I happen to be by a beach I take a short stroll, but then I’m not committed to how long other people want to stay for which is at least an order of magnitude too long.
*I think I went to a lakeside beach in NY literally once or twice on my own initiative.
I love the beach!
I like looking for seashells, floating on my inner tube, swimming and snorkelling, building sand castles, clambering over rocks, sunbathing, inspecting interesting wildlife, watching the seabirds, watching people or just reading a good book while lying on my sarong!
I like the beach at dawn when it’s deserted, throughout the day as families come and go, at sunset it’s magnificent and nothing is better than a moonlit walk on a lovely quiet beach.
I love me some South Pacific beaches, with coral reefs to snorkel, pristine water and often undeveloped islands. I’ve been very fortunate in my life to visit many truly spectacular beaches from SE Asia to S America.
But I’m no snob, I also love going to my lovely local beach on Lake Huron, or up to the beautiful clear lakes of Northern Ontario, where beach may give way to rocky shores! Still awesome.
There is something about being by the water, whether lake or ocean, that I find very soothing. The pace of life at the beach just suits me better, I think.
So if you call me up, and say, “Hey, wanna go to the beach?”, I’m ALWAYS gonna answer, “Hell yes! I can be ready in 15 mins!”
Man, I fucking love the beach, particularly the beaches of the Caribbean. A gentle sea breeze, comfortable chaise lounge, umbrella to block the sun, beach bar dude bringing cold beers whenever I drain the current bottle, occasionally lighting the one hitter, what’s not to like.
I usually do not go into water past knee deep. Mostly I read, drink, smoke, and stare at the horizon.
When my brother lived in Germany, I passed up offers to visit because I’d rather spend vacation time on a beach. Likewise, my gf has visited London, France, Ireland, and Iceland without me; traveling with friends instead. I have no interest in vacationing in a non-Caribbean location.
I’ve never been to Europe or Asia, but I’ve been to ten(ish) islands in the Caribbean.
Depends on which kind of beach. A beach like this? Absolutely not. A deserted beach like this, that can only be reached by boat, where I’m the only person for a mile in any direction? My idea of heaven. I occasionally go to the one in the link for 4-5 days (those are my feet in the clip) and enjoy the solitude of just me and my dog.
I have the complexion of a vampire and view sitting/lying for extended periods in direct solar radiation with about the same enthusiasm as a vampire. So no, as a general rule, I don’t like The Beach.
At dawn or sunset for a stroll, wade or short swim, sure, maybe, but not the hours-on-end stuff others seem to enjoy.
Heartbreakingly, as the oceans rise, (and they continue to at an increasing pace yearly!), the beaches of the world will be some of the first things to disappear. There will be shoreline still, of course. But it takes eons for a white sand beach to be created.
I’m determined to visit as many as I can before that happens!
Heh. I have vitiligo. The backs of my hands burn from a camera flash.
So, I use the highest SPF sunscreen I can find, even though it’s marketed for use on babies. And I lounge under a big umbrella that the beach attendant painstakingly adjusts as the sun travels across the sky.
To answer this question, take a look at a few photos I posted on a different site. (Beaches are serious business.)
Wow! That’s an awesome collection, thanks for posting it!
I have hoards of shore finds too!
Not a beach person. My pale skin is just waiting to burn, I hate the feel of salt on my skin and I don’t like the crowds where I’ve been.
Give me the mountains.
I love body surfing. Other than that, meh.
For the beaches I’ve gone to the relationship: the better the waves the colder the water holds true, unfortunately.
The overwhelming problem with most beaches is either the area is relatively undeveloped and not much around. Esp. in terms of restaurants. Or it is hugely overdeveloped and there’s just a billion crappy places around. If there’s not a ton of tourists coming in, then the economy can’t support much variety and if there’s a ton of tourists coming in then … there’s a ton of tourists coming in.
I like the beach in a limited context. I like strolling along the beach, looking for cool animals and shells, preferably in the morning or evening so that I don’t get roasted by the sun. I like standing out on the beach on a clear night. And I like splashing around in the beach as long as there aren’t a whole bunch of people around me and, again, the sun isn’t directly over me.
But as a kid, we’d occasionally go to the beach and I always kind of disliked the experience. Too hot, too sandy, too many people.
I love the beach. I love the smell of the ocean and the smell of suntan lotion and sun baked skin. Walking along the shore line is the best exercise in the world and one of my favorite things to do.
Love, love, LOVE the beach.
Day and night. Sunshine and rain. Coarse sand or fine. Golden or white.
I love swimming in it, walking on it, lying on it, watching it, photographing it, dreaming of it.
I love its air. I love salty crunchy hair and leaving a trail of sand in my wake.
I love the way the ocean washes you clean and reminds you how completely insignificant you are.
…
I was born within shouting distance of the beach (the original Scripps Clinic in La Jolla) and I get back to the ocean as often as I can.
I love jogging on the beach, boogie boarding, body surfing, beachcombing and just being at the beach. When I went to Australia I made a pilgrimage to Bondi Beach. I got a big laugh when one of the lifeguards, who easily pegged me as a tourist, said, “Don’t worry, the sharks don’t come in for lunch for at least another hour.”
…hope you got to see a better beach than Bondi while you were here blondebear!
I really like standing (not swimming) in the ocean, about waist deep. I like the sound and feel of it. That’s about it, though.
After we return home from a beach vacation, my gf purposely delays laundering the contents of the beach bag (towels, coverups) just so she can, weeks later, revel in the aroma of the bag’s contents.
