A quick SDMB survey: those of you who own more than one car / truck / van / etc, do you own a mix of foreign and domestic autos, or do you single-source. I suppose this question is mostly aimed at US residents.
1st data point: I have 2 japanese cars, a Toyota and a Subaru.
We have two Japanese cars and a Japanese motorcycle (Toyota, Honda, Honda); my in-laws have two Honda cars, a Chevy pickup, and a '54 Mercury (before the Mercury, FIL had a '63 Buick Riviera). My parents have some uninspired American car, or maybe a Saturn.
04 Dodge Durango (replaced an 02 Durango which replaced a 94 Mazda MPV)
94 Plymoth Voyager (replaced a 80 Civic)
80 Toyota Flatbed
69 Ford Thunderbird
67 Ford Mustang
Who can tell? The line between foreign and domestic gets blurrier all the time. Previously foreign manufacturers have set up shop in Kentucy and Tennessee. Ford has a working relationship with Mazda and owns Jaguar. GM has a working relationship with Toyota. Chrysler merged with Mercedes. These days, it’s possible for a car to be both foreign and domestic.
Our main day to day cars are both Honda Civics. Never owned a more reliable car with good gas mileage.
We also have a big Ford 350 van that I use for touring and festivals, though. Yeah, it’s had some problems with the engine but I’ve not yet seen an import van big and comfortable enough to tour in with a full PA and instruments (including a giant honking upright bass.)
2004 Mini
2004 Mercedes SL500
2003 Toyota Prius
2003 Chevrolet Suburban
1958 VW Bug
1971 VW Bug (convertible)
and a 2004 Prius if you count my car.
So, yeah, we’ve got a mix–but we’d buy all foreign if we didn’t need the Suburban to haul people and stuff. It’s very weird to see that monster sitting next to the Prii.
3 Fords (65, 69, 88)
1 Nissan (high quality, should go another 300K)
1 BMW (best vehicle on ze planet!)
1 Fiat (don’t talk smack! It was my dad’s. My kid will drive this some day, and so will his kid)
2 Jeeps (both junk, down to every last rusty nut, bolt and burned up wire)
1 Toyota (was ‘fair’, but now ‘dead’)
4 1/2 Yamahas (including the dreaded RZs)
2 Hondas (one so perfect, it would be almost boring if it wasn’t so pretty)
1 Kawasaki (fake Triumph, better than original)
2 Suzukis (faultless, despite massive abuse)
I don’t forsee ever buying another domestic car again. Not after owning the Nissan and BMW especially.
The Saturn has no hp but the torque is great. It drags the car off the line nicely so it’s fun to drive. I’m pleased with the automatic and the 33 mpg around town (36 hwy). It’s been trouble free.
The Bird is a pile of aftermarket Ford parts so I quess it’s still American.
moi - '90 Honda Civic. I got the Turtle brand new, I have never been SO satisfied with a car.
Hubby - 1990 Chevrolet Z71 4-wheel drive (personal), 2000 Ford 3/4 ton diesel (work truck) #1 daughter - 1996 Honda Accord #1 son - 1988 GMC 1/2 ton pickup #2 son - 1990 Chevy S-10 Durango
(funny, those last two have the same 6-cylinder in 'em) #2 daughter - mid '80’s (not sure) Mitsubishi Mirage
we also have a young man living with us while he’s going to school. He was driving a red Chevy twin of the above mentioned GMC, but his mom recently got him a 2000 Accord.
other misc. work trucks & vehicles:
1988 Chevy Silverado
1986 Chevy 1/2 ton fuel pickup
Honda Big Red 3-wheeler
45-horse Massey Ferguson tractor
30-horse Kubota tractor
Parents have a Chevy Equinox and Mercury Sable (Z-plan = fabulous deal). When I get a car it’ll be a BMW. Also my dad said he’s not going to buy a domestic car again. Call this a future datapoint.
