I’ve never smoked weed and when I saw the OP I thought, “What, another weed thread I’ll bet…” And sure enough.
I also quickly thought about communion, then religious “partaking events” in general and that brought me right back around to weed. What a wonderful wiggly world.
And no, I don’t. But I would if inclination and passive opportunity ever coincided.
I assumed weed. Another such word might be “party”.
What church does?
I use “partake” interchangibly with “participate” so it could mean just about anything to me.
I would never have guessed pot.
I wouldn’t have thought weed. Maybe some stodgy old man in a top hat asking if I’d ‘care to partake in a brandy?’
The only time I’d heard it was with a religious meaning, and I don’t mean in Jamaica.
Mormons “partake of the sacrament.” That’s pretty much my main association with the word. Although, being the nerd I am, I tend to use slightly archaic words liberally.
I definitely thought weed. Then I thought maybe communion. I do smoke weed. I’m not Catholic.

Pot is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the thread title.
I thought of alcohol. I don’t partake, and have used that phrase to politely decline proffered beverages myself. Admittedly I use that phrase because my grandparents did.
Is there some pop culture reference to partaking of weed with which I’m unfamiliar?

Yeah, but ‘party’ is used by everyone to mean a whole bunch of things, like “a birthday party” or “a party of four”.

My first reaction was “in what”. Communion was what I thought you were going to discuss. As, in “Do you partake of communion/the sacrament when visiting a church with significantly different understandings of the ritual?”
I don’t smoke, and I’m not in the Army anymore.
Once, long ago, I had a social worker use the word as a way of asking (without actually asking) whether or not I was in an intimate relationship with my flatmate.
(NZ having laws about a relationship in the nature of a marriage counting as marriage – or at least sometimes counting as marriage – for the purposes of social benefits means testing… in this case an unemployment benefit).
It was a weird conversation because she was unwilling (or unable) to clarify, and I was unwilling to help her.
