I have just encountered quite possibly the most flighty and capricious student in my tenure at this school. I was walking to my office from my morning class, I rounded a corner and said hello to a few students, rounded the next corner and BAM!, there she was…shouting in a very high pitch, almost squeaky way, questions about the upcoming exam.
I am still walking, nodding my head as she is walking sideways almost backward expressing her questions to me. Her head is darting around like a rabid, atomic, raptor on massive doses of steroids. We turn the next corner and enter my office, she sits ono the arm chair still gaggling her questions and I sit on the sofa. She’s rattling off more questions and looking at the artwork and books in my office…then she stoped almost as abruptly as she started, I detect a slight wheeze.
My brow furrows a bit and I say, “Tammy, did you get my study sheet for the exam? most of those questions are on it…”
[Say this next part as fast as you can, and in one breath to get the full effect]->
*“Yes! Mr.P, I got it but I still need to know if we can bring the formulas with us or do we have to memorize them, cuz if we have to memorize them I have to allot more time to study and if I have to alot more time to study I have to schedule other study time for other classes cuz Tuesday nights are my library nights cuz I usually don’t have enough time over the weekend cuz I work at dunkin doughnuts most weekends” *
I know…I tried to remain expressionless as well!
So do any of you know any flibbertigibbets or extremely excited types?
BTW, she is carrying a solid A in the course…very bright individual.
Personally, I like this kind of behavior. I am way laid back, and it counters my personality. And I think that what some people might consider annoying, I find to be amusing/entertaining/engaging.
I’ve known* a couple. Incredible fun, let me tell you.
I really hurt one girl’s feelings, tho. I was tempermental that day anyways. When she stopped rattling off about whatever it was I aggressively wasn’t listenig to, and asked me if I was indeed aggressively not listening to her, I said, “God Damn! Do you EVER shut up!?”
It was a mean thing to do, and I never did really things right, because you can’t take it back.
Anyways, it can be endearing (in some people), if you figure out how to deal with it. Remember, they may be wondering why we’re all so stodgy and quiet. Perspective.
And of course, it’s limited to women. This one guy I know** is absolutely the most flibberdegibbity person I’ve ever seen.
*Biblically
But neither do I relate to someone being “just high strung” or “flighty” without cause. (People can be unusually talkative for a number of reasons – none of them worthy of ridicule from someone claiming to hold a doctorate in psychology.
(Ilsa – Back to sex education for you, young man! The “technical” term is wide on.
Here’s looking at Euclid!
Horrifying Howler Monkey, you are not alone in being uneasy in a period of silence. When you are with a group of people and there is a sudden silence, notice how often the next thing that is said is an attempt at humor.
