Not in the US, but in Canada, where universities have football teams too.
I prefer the pro game–either the Canadian CFL or the American NFL. In spite of the fact that I went to two universities here (U of Toronto and U of Alberta), both of which have football teams; I’ll say that once I graduated, I just didn’t care about how their teams are doing. Their games are often televised, but I can’t be bothered; and I don’t know of any of my old classmates who care either. We do get US college football games on TV, and they are fun to watch around New Year’s, but at other times, I’d still rather watch a pro game.
My experience and region match yours, Monkey: college ball in general, and UGA & GSU are my particular favorites. Yes, there are plenty of pro fans around, but they’re definitely not as die-hard nor as prevalent as the college fans.
Until the Titans came to Nashville my only interest in the Pros went to the Dolphins in the Csonka years and the Steelers in the Bradshaw years. I’ve been a college fan all my life with SEC teams my favorites to watch and pull for. I have zero interest in other team sports except football. I used to listen to baseball on the radio when I was in grade school.
Alabama is much stronger a state for college football than Tennessee, as best I can tell. No personal experience in other Southern states.
There’s a map somewhere that shows regional football interests, but I suspect its validity or I’d try to locate it for you.
I’ll watch the NFL but my main love is college ball. Born in Louisiana; undergrad at LSU. Moved around quite a bit as a kid and adult (some south; some west). Settled down in Virginia now.
Upper midwest. I prefer NFL, by a wide margin. I do watch my Badgers most weekends, but I definitely don’t make it a point to watch them, and I’m not fussed if I don’t watch. (Didn’t watch college ball this weekend, matter of fact. I see that Wisconsin won, so that’s good.)
College football is just so mediocre. Missed plays, missed catches, bad tackling (actually, I rather sound like I’m talking about the Vikings now). 4th and 25s attempts that actually are successful instead of squashed out of hand, like they should be. And the length! I just don’t have (or want) 5 hours to devote to a football game.
