How ready are you for NCAA/NFL Football to get started?

Public poll

10 = I wanted it to start yesterday!

5 = I’m content to wait for the regular season games

1 = If it never starts I won’t even notice

0 = I’ll tell you how little I care!

Other values: improvise

Just wanted to get a measure of the patience factor here.

(poll coming)

  1. I love football, but baseball is king for me, which is why I hate listening to the local sports radio dweebs whine about how this is the most horrible time of year for them. “There’s nothing happening, whaaa!” Plus, I’ve had more than enough NFL lockout talk. Wake me when it’s over.

7: the lockout is extremely frustrating because the offseason is an important and compelling part of the game. I can’t wait for the games, but I also really enjoy the offseason stuff: free agency, training camp, even preseason so we can get a look at the rookies and new guys.

I think I could take or leave the NFL starting on time. My Chefs are poised for another breakout (can you have two breakouts in a row?), but other than that, I really don’t care.

The college season is going to be fantastic. The Irish are actually going to not suck (I hope), and the USC game is in prime time in South Bend. There are no excuses for anyone within 300 miles to not make it out.

My teams, Auburn and Titans, are heading for letdown seasons if you can believe the talk. The Lockout activities have been way past boring and Auburn’s chances to repeat a perfect season are too low to suit me. My patience factor is about a 7 or 8: I can wait, but I just hate the summer doldrums and have been tempted at times to watch some replays of past seasons’ games, but I keep coming here for my “entertainment.”

Come on, Football!

For the last 7 or 8 years this would’ve been a 10 by this time of year, but the perpetual suck of my team has worn me down, and the squabbling between millionaires and billionaires is doing a lot to sour me to the whole deal.

Meh. I voted 4. I like football, pro and college, but it’s mid-baseball-season, and I LOVE baseball. Also, the labor strife and OSU corruption stories are wearing thin. Unlike with baseball, there’s too much off-season football coverage, especially with the draft and OTAs. It’s a goddamn 12-month sport, and that’s tiresome. It doesn’t build up anticipation for the regular season, IMO.

By the time Spring Training starts, I’m starving for baseball, because of the complete lack of off-season coverage. But when NFL preseason starts, I’m already tired of it.

Joe

Baseball is so freaking useless. Gimme some damn football.

I’m going to become a football referee this year, too, but I still want my NFL.

I love football but I don’t really miss it until September. For now I’m happy with enjoying summer, and baseball.

(5) I love college football, I seldom watch the NFL. But I can wait for the season, the only reason why I would want it to come quicker is to skip the heat of July/August.

4, perhaps the lowest ever for me. Even if there is an NFL season, the Bears never seem to be able to put two decent seasons together. I’m afraid this will be a pretty big letdown. Also, Florida wasn’t very good last year, and they have an unproven new coach, so I’m a bit leery of what will happen this year.

Good on you. I’ll be doing my 3rd year of games. Might even get some high school ones.

And I’m terribly excited for college football, not so much for the NFL, and that’s normal for me. OSU has a great shot this year and I’ll be in the student section for the last time. (I’m also excited for intramural flag football season!)

Oklahoma State? Oregon State? Surely you are not referring to Ohio State, who will be lucky to win 8 games.

  1. Hate the lockout but will watch the NFL as soon as it is back on. Can’t wait to see Andy Dalton get his head ripped off by James Harrison.

3 for me, please.

You may not get a NFL this season. So watch the best game, baseball.
College is a much poorer brand of football than the pro game. But it is more emotional . So I watch it too.

Right now, I’m at a 6. I’m starting to think about fantasy football for next season, but I’m following baseball and the NHL offseason right now. I start getting into football mode after the baseball trade deadline most years. August has to be the most boring sports month with all the NFL holdouts and Little League World Series coverage on ESPN.

A zero. I have no allegiance to an NFL team so my interest in the sport is purely for amusement. My college team (California) perenially underachieves, plus we have no promising QB in the pipeline, so I’m not excited about that, either. I’m a huge baseball fan, so I’m not missing anything right now. Finally, I like having games every day of the week, and with the NBA surely heading into a protracted lockout, I’m not looking forward to twiddling my thumbs Tuesday-Friday in November and December.

Remember the name Austin Hinder.

I don’t care about the NFL, but I want the lockout ended so I can have an empty golf course again on Sunday afternoons in fall.

I like college football, but I really only care about my Alma Mater and the local team. I rarely watch games that don’t involve either of those two teams.

Hardly. It’s true that the college athletes aren’t quite to where the pro players are, but in terms of interesting strategy, emotion (like you say) and unpredictability, the college game has the pro one beat hands down. Pro games are rarely interesting- you know what the coaches will do for the most part, and the players play very well. It’s like watching a video game of football where the computer is playing itself.

Pro football: 32 teams running virtually identical offensive and defensive sets. Marquee players always play; there’s not much opportunity for little known players to shine. There’s enough turnover that you can’t really get into a team, because the next year, the roster will be significantly different.

College football: 120 FBS members. Many run unique sets and plays and have “personalities” so to speak. You have REAL rivalries, none of this stupid Cowboys-Eagles contrived rivalry stuff. You have coaches that think differently. You have the opportunity for little known players to excel, and you have turnover, but on more of a scheduled basis, with players moving through their 4-5 years of eligibility.

I couldn’t care less about the NFL, but I can’t wait for the college season to start, so I said a 7.
