I thought the title was “The Origin of Homosexuality” but I can’t find any reference to any book like that. I don’t remember the author’s name either, just that they just used initials for the first (and possibly second) name plus the last name, and that the first initial might have been A. I think it was published around 1968. I read it in the mid 70’s.
The book was a review and discussion about research around the causes of male homosexuality. It was written in a decidedly dry and non-sensational style, and it seemed to have the purpose of dispelling common myths about what causes men to be gay and to focus on various research studies instead. The conclusions were ones that most educated people take for granted now: that homosexuality is not a choice, nor is it a moral issue, it is a result of various combinations of conditions outside the control of the individual. It was a lifeline to this poor closeted queer who had no idea why he should have been so different from (it seemed) nearly everyone else.
I can imagine that there has been tons of additional research since it was written, and that the author didn’t issue a newer version so it has gone out of print. But I can’t believe that it has just disappeared from all records. So I must be mis-remembering the title so thoroughly that it doesn’t even come up peripherally in any of my searches.
So please, if you recall the book I am talking about, tell me what you remember. I haven’t thought about it for such a long time, and now that I have again, it is driving me crazy that I can’t find it.
