Do you remember who you argue with in SDMB?

Well, as I think highly of Why Not, I have no problem with that, but she is a she and I am a he and except for both of us being very concerned with the environment we do not have much else in common except the Why & What two word names.

It might help if you can catalog me in your memory as What Exit? {Jim}

Jim

You’re so vain! You probably think this post is about you. (Oh, wait, it is…)

I’ve actually caught myself a few times thinking it was WhyNot posting but instead it was What Exit? and was surprised at the post. I’m going to assume that this confusion is caused by the same part of me that can’t remember which witch was which in “A Wrinkle In Time.” the book that my name was taken from.

I actually enjoy the fact that their aren’t annoying signatures here that make it impossible not to notice who it is that is posting. I know that it keeps me from being biased towards the message. I’m pathologically unable to hold grudges towards people so it saves me the trouble of trying. Heck, I’m participating in a pit thread not because I have a particular beef with a user, but because of the lack of comprehension being shown. I’m considering it more of a public service than a bashing.

I enjoy heated debates and rarely ever take them personal. Heck, I tend to like people who enjoy debating, even if their particular stance drives me batshit crazy. So pick a fight with me if you WANT me to like you.

I get the feeling that I forget people but that people dont forget me. ::nervous expression::

Now that I think about it, the only people I really remember are those I deal with in the Pit, and a few long-time Dopers whom I’ve enjoyed reading over the years.

There are only a couple of subjects that I get upset about enough to start getting very opinionated about, and I have had some strong words with people over them. But I can’t remember who they are, and have no idea if they also remember it was me they were arguing with, so almost every time I go into a thread it’s like a clean slate, for me. I guess the appearance I give, from that, is that I hold no grudges.

In truth there are only about ten people here I really recognise as distinct personalities, and even then I sometimes get them confused with others. The rest are just amorphous ‘SDMB regulars’.

Sometimes I am really surprised when I encounter someone I’ve never heard of, but nevertheless has a post count numbering in the thousands. At those times I think I must’ve seen hundreds of posts by them, but they never registered in my head as worth being payed attention to, which is kind of sad.

I’ve never seen you before in my life.

Autolycus: Oh yeah, I remember you. Yer the TMI guy.

  1. There are a few posters here who, when I see their names, I want to read the threads because their posts/questions are funny, intelligent, generous, etc. (I’ve emailed a few of them directly – King of Soup, where are you?).

  2. There are a few posters here that I look for because they’ve engaged me and/or others in serious exchanges without it getting personal, even where they’ve needed to school me (or others).

  3. I don’t have anybody on ignore.

  4. There is one poster here whose posts I skip (first language not English), whose posts are just hard for me to read for some reason.

  5. There are posters who don’t know how to use capitals/hard returns – I scroll past those.

  6. There are a couple here who I avoid because I’ve gotten hostility/snark/stalking for reasons I can’t divine.

  7. There are a couple here who I don’t bother with anymore because, regardless of where I fit on the Doper Density Sprectrum,* when I’ve contributed questions, based on their assertions, or refutations with appropriate cites, they either ignore my post or change the subject/goalpost.

  8. Most threads that are interesting I read entirely, especially if I think I might learn something new (or post). But if it contains certain groups of posters who appear to have decided, for whatever reason, that they’ll only talk to each other (wankfest), I’ll read but won’t post.

How do you get in the middle of a clique of posters whose exchanges seem to only be about how much longer their post is than their clique-mate’s last post, how much bigger and how many more such words they can use, and how finely they’ve now split the already split-to-death hair of the animal that’s being beaten to death. And there’s only so many times you can see someone post exactly what you’ve already posted, clearly but simply, but using 3 times the space and 4 times the consonants in each word.**

*Trademarked, for those ready to pounce.
** I know this was long, but I hope I didn’t split any already-split-hairs.

I definitely remember the people I argue with, and tend to recognize more prolific GD/Pit posters by prior state political belief. However, what usually draws me to any given thread is an engaging topic line and an interesting OP. I don’t usually get drawn into threads based on who started it or who is participating in it.

I tend to remember people who post real life stories for awhile, too. For example when someone posts about a medical complication or some sort of legal trouble I usually try to watch for updates from that person out of curiosity and to see how things turned out for them.

Ohhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaaaah! You just gained a BIG notch of respect and affection in my eyes.

Aunt Beast! Now there’s a fond flashback! How I loved her!

I fuck all you haters.

In Russia …

I remember dudes and their reps but I almost never remember any specific debate or arguement I got into with anyone. Some dudes apparently do carry grudges, however.

We have those on the SDMB who judge their own worth by their post count, and those who judge their worth by the length and depth of their posts. And some are just compensating for something.*

I notice I’m sometimes remembered by people’s perceptions of my political beliefs, which is entertaining. Early on, I made some posts critical of Bill Clinton, and some posters tagged me as a conservative tool. Later, I made some posts critical of George Bush, and others tagged me as a liberal tool. Maybe I’m just a tool

  • I’m kidding. I grow weary of the “compensating” jokes everytime somebody sees my truck.

I doubt if I stand out, despite my post count, namely because I’m rarely in GD.

That said, unlike Cervaise, I love many of you, tolerate a whole bunch of you, and generally enjoy the ever living crap out of this place.

Hey, I recognize you well enough, I am pretty sure I even PM’d you about appreciating your occasional contribution to GD. So, you have at least one fan.

Jim

Snap-On or Craftsman?

Thanks…you made me blush… :o

I remember having a lengthy debate about legal drafting a year ago with an unseen marsupial…

I tend to remember people I argue with who have opinions I especially dislike or find especially bizarre, or who have distinctive posting styles. Liberal, say, falling into the latter catagory.

Been in a few w/ Guin.

I do remember people I’ve argued with–probably too clearly for my own good. It leads to a certain level of cognitive dissonance when I find myself agreeing with their stance on some unrelated issue, and it makes me uncomfortable. I probably just take these things way too personally. :smack:

This is probably why I don’t post here very much, although I enjoy lurking a whole lot!
