I’m literally the only person from the the area in my profile. And my friends know how I write and think. Facebook will tell them my birthday. And my name does start with a T and I am a big dude. And I have revealed a sliver of personal information here that they would know about.
It doesn’t matter if I don’t post in the thread. I still post quite frequently, and they could go looking to see who I am after I link it.
And the only people I would even consider inviting over here would be quite bright.
I’m much more likely to just take the info I learned from here and repeat it than to link someone here.
My main answer is a big “Yes and No” coupled with It Depends. Most often, when the thread or post is so perfect that paraphrasing won’t quite get the full impact, I’ll provide a link to the post (or thread). That way, if the quality is ideal or the “point and laugh” aspect is too hard to emulate, I’ll let the original words speak for themselves. Now and then I’ll copy the link to it and let the reader (whom I trust not to ridicule me for the suggestion!) judge for herself/himself whether to attach her/his name to the concept as he/she passes it still further along.
I’d estimate that I’ve done this sort of thing (over the decade or so that I’ve been visiting here) dozens of times. I’d have to think hard to come up with specific examples, but I’m sure there are “many” of them!
Y’all can come up with some real jewels, you know?
Along those lines, a collection of “The Wit and Wisdom of The Straight Dope” ought to sell as well as those books like “Book of Lists” and their imitators have done. (Are there any such?)
FWIW, years back I had a thread asking for contributions of noteworthy threads that were a cut above the just plain funny or witty. That thread saw quite a bit of action for months (or longer) but has since dried up. I’ll find a link to it and post that later…
I use facebook to meet women so since I met the woman who would become my wife I stopped using Facebook. I use twitter for work. Neither of those reasons are why I’m on the Dope so I don’t have any reason to share here with there. I’m trivially easy to find on the internet now so anonymity isn’t really a concern i just don’t use social media for the same reason I’m here so option 2 fits me pretty well.
I went for the last option because I didn’t know we had that feature, I am not sure what that feature is/means, and I do so little Facobook or anything else that it doesn’t matter much.
I didn’t know we had that feature, but to clarify my vote, I’m not going to start sharing threads to Social Media. I can’t think of any topic where I’d want to share a thread here instead of an article someone linked to, or just start the conversation with my friends from scratch.
I’ve had a longstanding habit of not sharing the SDMB elsewhere, as a leftover from our “don’t start any board wars” days. I have no idea what TPTB think of such sharing nowadays.
I have no desire to draw my old classmates and distant relatives to this forum. I really don’t do social media anymore anyway so it’s rare that I’d share anything other than pics and family news.
I use social media plenty, but I’ve never thought to share a SDMB thread. I hate “articles” that are just regurgitations of tweets and Redit threads; I’d put that in the same category.
