Do you wear your engineering ring?

I noticed that many Canadians wear theirs but I know of no one in the US who does. I think I am going to start wearing mine.

It’s a big hairy deal in Canada, for some reason.

I think it’s kind of cool. Do you (not necessarily you, RickJay, but the board as a whole even though I would like your opinion) think it’s pretentious and silly?

I had never even heard of it until I met a few Canadian engineers. It would be cool if we did that in the U.S.

BTW, the engineering schools in Canada must be very, very good. I’ve worked with several Canadian engineers in my eighteen plus years as a professional and they have, without exception, been outstanding.

I’ll start in Alabama and you start in California. It will spread like wildfire.

I have worn my ring daily, ever since the day I got it.

At the ring ceremony, there were about 20 of us getting rings. So there are a bunch in Miss. also, dgrdfd!

That’s because it originated in Canada: Iron Ring 1; Iron Ring 2

Electronics engineers here have them too–it’s not just mechanical or structural engineers. There are a number at my work. I once found an engineer’s ring on the floor outside my cubicle; the owner was very glad to get it back.

My undergrad university (in the states) had an annual ring ceremony. I happened to have a schedule conflict that night and couldn’t attend. :frowning: Wish I would have, cause now I feel like I really missed out. I would wear one if I had it. I’m such a dork that I wear my Tau Beta Pi bent to presentations for good luck.

I have mine and wear it whenever I can. I will not wear it to jobsites or when working on projects around the house, an old habit from working in the trades as ironworker/welder for over 25 years, where wearing a ring could cost you a finger or worse. I recieved mine after getting my degree “later in life” so maybe have a better appreciation for what it represtents. Since the premise for wearing the ring is very sound, I do wear it every chance I get. I have only seen one other Engineer wearing his, and he found it amazing that I instantly knew what it was/represented. No one else in his firm (approximately 45 Engineers) knew anything about it. Sad state of affairs there.

I had the option to buy a ring when I graduated with an ME degree. Didn’t know what it was for or why I should have one, so I passed on it. There was no ceremony - just a ring.

Most Canadian engineers I know wear theirs constantly, and I think it’s a pretty cool thing to have a symbol of your profession to wear around daily. Not pretentious or silly at all. I know I would, if I could (but then again, I think the equivalent for philosophy is a scarf and two weeks’ worth of stubble… and I can only manage the scarf).

Apparently it’s not very common outside of Canada - I was teasing a colleague about his naked pinkie (he’s an electronics engineer), and it turns out that the ring wasn’t common in Israel where he did his undergrad.

Every engineer I know has the ring. As has already been said, it’s a big deal here.

I got my BSME from Rice, and I don’t have one. I had never even heard of them until I got to graduate school and met a number of Canadians.

I don’t much care for rings, personally, so had the opportunity presented itself to acquire one I probably would have declined. I didn’t buy a class ring, either. (I wear my wedding band - most of the time - and that’s it besides a cheap wristwatch.)

In Finland, the engineer’s ring not very often seen, perhaps because of its price (regular models start at about 200EUR, slim ones are bit less).

The current design (from 1962) has a cross-section of an engineer’s scale, as seen here (with a pin)

I’m also a Rice engineering grad, and I’d never heard of them either until I met a guy who wore one. He was kind of a pretentious type, IMHO.

Brad, you didn’t get a Rice ring?! (Actually, I haven’t worn mine in years–it needs to be resized, unfortunately.)

Nope. It’s something I was pretty neutral on, and at the time I just saw it as an ill-advised expense that I wasn’t going to ever wear. In hindsight, I was probably right about that, and I can’t say I have ever regretted the choice.

That said, Rice class rings are pretty cool looking. I could probably still get one if I ever changed my mind - I think?

(What do I regret not doing is, er, “losing” my MOB fedora. I’d have been willing to pay the deposit on that…)

My brother wears his ring - he’s a recent grad of McGill in Montreal.

I think it’s neat.

My husband does, off and on. I like the idea it represents.

I’m sure you can. I’d contact the Rice Campus Store. Actually, here’s a link:

“Louie Louie, oh no… Me gotta go!”

I played a kazoo once with the MOB.
