Do you write like a male or female?

I tried this on a variety of my work-related e-mails, and generally came up male (I’m female), but tended to have a stronger female score when writing to a woman.

When work is involved, I try hard to write to my audience. It looks as if I may be succeeding – good.

I saw the gender genie first mentioned here in the Quiddity Glomfuster Pitting. I put two of my posts in. The first one scored female by about a 30 point margin. The second one scored male by over 150 points.

I thought the words they categorized as being male or female was rather odd. I’m sure there is some research behind it (one would hope) but I was rather happy that it wasn’t what I would guess would be considered feminine.

It judged my 15-page paper on violence in monotheism as male-

Female Score: 2835
Male Score: 6007

My latest rant in the pit, female-

Female Score: 1415
Male Score: 800

My most recent post, male-

Female Score: 272
Male Score: 403

I’m female, BTW.

Makes me wonder, though- I am a girl who generally doesn’t enjoy the company of other girls (I only really get along with girls that also don’t like other girls). It doesn’t have anything to do with makeup, sports, or anything else. I’ve wondered what it was. It was impossible to explain why I thought Alaina was a “girly-girl” even though she rode dirtbikes and other generally masculine activities. I wonder if people have a similar ability to discern gender through language use, and that’s why I get along with guys and/or non-girly-girls better.

Hmmm…

It thought a piece of a supernatural story I’m working on was written by a woman. Not much of a surprise. My writing is always feeling-centric and I describe situations in non-absolute terms.

I was more surprised it thought my Kurt Vonnegut-inspired piece was also female. It thinks my ongoing short story about this weekend’s road trip is male - although it isn’t at the 500-word mark - which is correct and also not surprising to me.
