I was expecting this to be random. According to the story, it was arranged by the girl’ parents.
This happened local to me.
I hate the world sometimes.
Agreed. I’d make one small addition: I hate the world sometimes, I hate people often.
I don’t hate people… better to say I hate the darker aspects of human nature. This dumbshit doctor probably had the same thing done to her, and believed she was in the right, and so on. And the parents no doubt believed they were doing what was best for those poor girls.
This is local enough that the org I work for could have done the exam. Our sexual assault forensic clinic just opened to pediatric cases. I don’t know if it did, and could neither confirm nor deny any such thing, just the fact that it happened in my backyard is particularly disheartening. And hat’s off to the forensic nurses who deal with that horror day in and day out.
Question for the legal eagles: would this be prosecuted as sexual assault?
How might the parents be charged?
Well, I could try reading the damned article. Apparently genital mutilation is common enough to be a specific crime. Lovely.
Is it really necessary to make fun of this tragedy via the thread title?
+1
:dubious:
Yes, I have to agree that I find the thread title offensive.
Well, even as a joke it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Yeah, I thought this was going to be a complaint about a woman getting “preferential” treatment from the justice system.
It is, of course, a play on the famous OJ glove defense.
(No apology forthcoming.)
Which also implies that she’s not guilty of anything.
And thus, a story of actual importance was turned into a classless punchline. Excellent.
I took the story and the incident seriously, which is why I posted it. But I also have gallows humor about just about everything. For those bothered by that, I can only offer a very sincere “suck it up, buttercup.”
Right, that’s why I found it confusing.
I’m still interested in knowing what the parents can be charged with.
Aiding and abetting would be my WAG.
Throw her in a pit with snakes and spiders and leave her there. The fact that a woman did this to little girls makes me furious.
The doctor was charged with under two laws:
(1) 18 U.S. Code § 116 - Female genital mutilation
(2)18 U.S. Code § 2423 - Transportation of minors
(a)Transportation With Intent To Engage in Criminal Sexual Activity.
Here is what the latter says:
Since no mention has been made of prostitution, the Department of Justice apparently believes that female genital mutilation falls under “sexual activity for which any person can be charged with a criminal offense.”
So. the parents, allegedly, knowingly transported their minor children in interstate commerce to engage in sexual activity for which any person can be charged with a criminal offense.
Here’s a depressing articleabout the practice in Kenya which includes the cutter’s point of view. The ideas behind this are deeply ingrained in the culture. I hope it can change but I can see how there is a good deal of pressure, on the girls, their parents and their prospective bridegrooms to carry on. Education must be the key.
