DOCTOR WHO: If The Doctor met and married a woman, would he be a bigamist? (Open spoilers)

Open spoilers, sweetie…

The Doctor married River Song.

However, the first time he met River Song she died (or something like it- she was downloaded, but her body was destroyed, so let’s call it died).

However, the first time he met her was after their wedding from her end, so technically he is a widower before he ever marries her.

So if he were to meet and marry another person (or alien- assume whoever he marries it’s a legal wedding), would that make him a bigamist? Or, since he was widowed before he married River, would he be a widower and thus free to remarry?

He’s never specifically mentioned past partners but he has stated that he’s been a father, so it’s possible there’s another Doctor’s Ex in some timelines somewhere as well, though as presumably she would have been Gallifreyan she might have been destroyed with the rest of her race IF she was alive when they were destroyed.

River Song never happened. She’s an abomination, an unsightly scar on the face of the series. I was happy when she died and I barely even knew her at the time. The more I knew, the more I hated her. The marriage didn’t count imo, and of course, my opinion is the one that counts. To me. So, to answer your OP, the doctor would not be practicing bigamy because he’s not technically married to anyone.

Watch this part of the episode again.

River Song didn’t marry the Doctor. She married a duplicate of him run by the Teselecta.

The Doctor had children, of course; the First Doctor was traveling with his granddaughter (though it’s possible that her calling him “grandfather” was just a term of respect).

Who says Time Lords can’t marry more than one spouse?

So far as we know, there is no law against polygamy by Time Lords. I’d think once you took into account the non-causal nature time travel relationships, it would be almost impossible to legislate any type of marriage so long as everyone involved was a consenting, sentient adult. Then you get into the difficulties of Time Lord clones with human brains marrying humans (Doctor 10-A and Rose), Doctors made of industrialized flesh (was there just the one?), chameleons, regenerations, and all the other fun stuff, bigamy is the least of River Song’s worries.

Has she ever been specifically addressed by any of the showrunners since the Eccleston reboot? I’m sure she’s come up at some -con somewhere.

11 just mentioned his granddaughter to Clara in the 2nd episode of the current half-series. Not by name, just said “granddaughter”, though, so maybe it was another granddaughter.
