As a side project by a fan.
Paul “OtaKing” Johnson’s anime Dr. Who
Want more!
Before I watch this, can you tell me please, are there spoilers for Season 6? I haven’t seen it yet and won’t for a while.
Nah, it’s old school. Pretty cool!
Thank you! I’ll watch it this weekend!
I thought it was wonderful, and the use of the original voices was great.
Wow! Whoever did that is really incredible. This it the sort of thing that makes the Internet awesome.
For those not sure about watching it, it’s a 13-minute animated film done as a “trailer” for a non-existent 80s anime Doctor Who featuring the third Doctor. It looks absolutely professional and gets everything spot-on.
I’m not a fan of 80s-style anime, and this encapsulates everything I don’t like about it, but it’s so well done, it’s a joy to watch. I am a Doctor Who fan, and this really shows what Doctor Who would have been like if it’d been done by a Japanese animation studio in the 80s. Jon Pertwee really works well as an anime character!
I could have sworn I’d seen that anime version the Doctor before.
And 80’s anime had the token character who spoke in Japanese but was understood by everyone?
I’ve only seen about two minutes and that was AMAZING. Thanks for the link!
Pretty damn cool!
You very likely have. OtaKing’s been working on it for four years, and posting sections of it as a work-in-progress in various places over that time.
Someone needs, needs, NEEDS to give this man a blank check and licensing rights and let him make a full series of this. I wouldn’t even mind original voice actors playing the Third Doctor, the Brigadeer, etc. as long as they got the characterization down pat. You can see elements of a story arc in there (The Two Masters join forces with the Cybermen in order to lure the Doctor into a trap, which works out well for them until the Daleks and Sontarans take notice) and i’d love to see how it would play out.
Are there tentacles?
Really? I thought that was pretty dire. The artwork was cool, but that’s about it.
Kind of like the last concert I went to. It sucked except for the music.
Seriously, what were you hoping for? Plot? It’s done as a trailor, which I spelled out early in the thread precisely to let people know that it wasn’t a mini-episode. And 80’s anime is all about flashy art and ridiculously huge battles over anything of substance (IMO). That’s why I said it encapsulates everything I dislike about that kind of anime, but it did it perfectly while keeping it very recognizably Doctor Who.
Too bad Pertwee’s not around to do new voiceovers. It just wouldn’t work as well with Tom Baker.
ETA:
Yes. Just a few, briefly, but yes.
link is dead
That sucks! All I see on the tubes is speculation that it must be a cease-and-desist order from the BBC. It should be because they made him take it down as a condition of the exclusive multi-year contract they gave him to produce animation for the BBC Doctor Who website, but I fear the world is not that just.
Well, at least I managed to show it to a couple of fellow Doctor fans, including one whose Doctor of choice is Pertwee. They were torn between laughter and “awesome”. Or perhaps it was simply a combination of both.
Something I liked, I guess.
try some non-fanboy animated Doctor Who - Scream of the Shalka

Didn’t realize this even existed! I guess it was shelved when the reboot happened.
