Doctor Who Revival S8E3 -- Robots of Sherwood (boxed spoilers until it airs on the West Coast)

I don’t know if this has been mentioned in the other threads, but for those of us who have access to iPlayer, the production team are making a sort of mini Doctor Who Confidential for every episode this series. Here’s the current one BBC One - Doctor Who Extra, Series 1, Robot of Sherwood

That link only works in the UK, unfortunately.

If anybody’s interested, here’s the deleted “beheading” scene from last night’s episode. I think the episode was fine without it, but it did explain something that didn’t quite make sense without it.

Spoilers, naturally:

I was afraid of that. There are a few posters on here who live outside the UK, but seem to have access to the iPlayer anyway though

There’s a free add-on called Hola Unblocker. For any Website you can make it think you’re logging in from a specific country. I know it works on Firefox, and the site says it works on all of the major Web browsers.

This x1000.

This new Doctor… he’s a bit of an asshole, isn’t he? I like that.

Kind of. And I like him, too.

I still wish they would tone down the comedy. The constant slapstick humor during Smith’s run is one of the reasons why I didn’t really care for his Doctor. Yeah, the humor here was different, but I still wasn’t crazy about it.

The teaser leads one to believe that next week won’t be so slapstick.

This was a silly MOWep with barely a nod to the arc. A fun goofy bit. If every episode was like this then it would get pretty old. Next week a more scary MOW … and then maybe a bit towards the arc. The key is balance.

Wow, I only saw the episode tonight and am surprised they cut the Sherriff’s head cutoff and replacing scene. I thought that was pretty important, or at least a nice touch, to the story.

Still, I liked the episode. I think Peter Capaldi needed a lighter episode to show how he would handle it and he was hilarious.

Yes, I think they lost an important plot point there:
The Sheriff is supposed to be a cyborg, that does not come accross well in the episode as broadcast.

Also I predict :

A connection to the Cybermen who will be in the finale
So the plot would have made a bit more sense with it kept.

Yes, and he comments on it during the fight, even in the aired version. He says something like, “You are no match for me. I’m half man and half engine!!”

This was the first ep I’ve seen of the new Doctor. He was … OK … my thought was he hasn’t really settled into the role yet, hasn’t found his metier; needed to be more irascible I think. I hope like Matt Smith he grows into the role.

But I thought the story was just plain silly. And not in a good way. Why gold, what on earth use would a noble element be on a spaceship? No rationale given. Why did shooting a gold arrow into the side of a spaceship help? No idea. How does anyone fire a gold arrow more than a few metres? They can’t. And so on.

The rumor is that they cut it because of the ISIS beheading films or something.

In an interview after filming the whole season, Capaldi has said that he’s still playing around and experimenting with the best way to play the Doctor. So he’s probably not comfortable yet, nor are the writers.

Though as far as writing goes, according to Moffat, and upcoming episode mid-season

(Just the episode name/number):

Episode 7 “Kill the Moon”

is supposed to be a huge game changer and break the Who mold. I guess we’ll see what happens there. It is a story from a writer who hasn’t done Who before.

Well, at least The Doctor didn’t have to teach them how to use a C-section on a birthing cow.

Let’s face it. It was a bad episode. Just plain bad.

Judging by this episode and the last season of Sherlock, I think that Gatiss has become a little too certain of his abilities as a humorist.

The Doctor was annoyed by the merriness of the Merry Men straight from minute 1. Why?

The Doctor and Robin had an instant competitiveness from minute 1. Why?

The Doctor is an expert swordsman, despite never having shown this skill before. Why?

Everything was skipping straight to the punchline, without bothering with the setup. If they’d bothered to show that the doctor is a cranky old bugger, then having him be annoyed by merriment makes sense. They didn’t really do that. If they showed that the Doctor was upset by Clara turning her attention from him to Robin, we might understand his side of things - though it remains unclear what Robin’s issue would be, since he wanted Marian, not Clara. It all just ended up as random nonsense, for no good reason.

I’d like to say that it was a fun romp, and I watched it with that expectation so I wasn’t too let down. But it really was pretty flawed.

Yep. Exactly what I thought. More Ainley than Delgado, but the resemblance was striking. Although that may have been an effect of the hair, goatee, and somewhat over-the-top Eeevil Villain acting

Except for in “The Sea Devils”, “Androids of Tara”, “The King’s Demons”, “The Christmas Invasion” …

Can anyone explain how the Doctor arranged for Maid Marion’s appearance at the end?
