In the Confidential, Steven Moffatt frequently says “The Doctor breaks all the rules” in the sense that, in desperate times, do whatever works.
Future Doctor was able to give Rory the screwdriver because Rory had already released him with the screwdriver given to him by the future Doctor, so he could then release the Doctor with it… and so on infinity. Moffat loves those kind of time loop paradox things. See: *Blink *and Time Crash.
Yeah, that made me immediately think of Torchwood as well. Actually, my first thought was, OMG River is actually Captain Jack! ![]()
River is part of the 51st century’s version of Torchwood? Nah.
-Joe
Plus, River said something to the effect of “A Nestene duplicate, I dated a Nestene duplicate once, swappable head…kept things fresh”
And considering, Rory IS a Nestene duplicate/Auton…
A Rory was. This one isn’t. Amy dated a duplicate for…15 minutes?
-Joe
Yes, once, their first date was to the Marianas Trench…
Unless I missed something here, Rory is still a “living plastic” lifeform, he used his (…must…resist…urge…to…pun…) “Hand-Gun” a few times in this episode, that would indicate to me that he’s still an Auton/ND
…rewatching the ep now…
The Rory at the wedding was not the Roman Soldier who guarded the Pandorica.
Matt Smith + Glastonbury + Orbital + Doctor Who Theme = Awesome.
That’s right, the Tardis-Pandorica-'Splodey-Big-Bang-II-Wibbly-Wobbly-Thingy rebooted the universe, so Rory is a meatbag at the end…
Note to self, do not watch NuWho when half asleep, you miss things…
Hope EW.com works btw.
Hope EW.com works btw. Cos it took more than a few hours to find Glastonbury video that might work in the US. Does it work?
People who fall through the cracks in time cease to have ever existed. There was such a crack in Amy’s house; apparently her parents fell through it.
Daleks fell through a crack in time; failed to exist.
Crack in time; failed to exist.
Dunno about your question about how River Song knew to come and give Amy the blank diary. Maybe she time traveled there from the future to help out (in yet another timey-wimey unexplainable loop) or maybe she’s just special and remembered somehow in a way that will hopefully be explained later.
I agree completely. Such a good way to end it. I believe I might have squealed and begun dancing about when Rory said that bit about the old wedding saying and I realized the brilliance of where the story was headed. I may have not stopped dancing until after the episode was over. ![]()
I also laughed when River answered “Yes” to the Doctor’s “or” questions. A friend of mine would pull that same gag time to time. Logically correct, but infuriating!
When the Doctor and River Song were talking, there at the end, was the music playing backwards? Playing the scene backwards, the music seems to sound as if it’s forward…though that could be confirmation bias. ![]()
The only problem is that there are SIX MONTHS until a new episode.
…River could remember the Doctor, because she is a time traveler and of course due to Timey Whimey. But only Amy could bring the Doctor back: because she had lived next to the crack and was exposed to the full extent of the crack energy.
Vincent and the Doctor - What an amazing episode this was. Beautiful in both the metaphorical and literal senses of the word. I choked up at the end too. And I got a huge kick out of the emotional and physical warmth of the episode - Amy’s excitement at meeting Vincent, and giving him sunflowers, and her hope that his life would change for the better when she returns to the museum, plus all the hugging and holding hands all around. And the bit with Dr Who as a a time travelers used to bouncing around in time having to sit there and wait all day for a painting to be finished was brilliant!
This was an excellent end to the series. Things definitely picked up in the last three episodes.
There were a number of anomalies in the last ep., but then there usually are. But overall it was a good story and the time travel worked well, although I was reminded of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure when the Doctor kept popping back to talk to Rory.
I am convinced that the force controlling the TARDIS is a future incarnation of the Doctor, possibly gone bad. I also think that River will be the one to kill this future incarnation, thus confirming that she killed the best man she ever knew (or something like that). Although, having said that if it does turn out to be Omega then I won’t be disappointed either.
I liked the fact that a few threads were left hanging and the Doctor did address the fact that whoever caused the TARDIS to explode was still out there.
Yeah, how often does one see a multi-season story arc?
So, for those of us who haven’t really watched any of the Old Who since we were ten or so…some specifics on Omega and the Black Guardian, please?
-Joe
I know you’ve already been told yes. Just want to add that the something blue is usually a garter - which gets tossed by the groom the same way that the bride tosses her bouquet.
And DSeid, I was looking forward to seeing the ducks, too. Hoopw they show up eventually.
Omega was a member of the Doctor’s race whose role in making the Gallifreyan method of time travel possible had made him something between a hero and a god to his people. Unfortunately, he ended up trapped in a black hole or an antimatter universe or something and went completely bonkers. He was considered such a serious threat to the universe that the Time Lords for the first time brought together multiple incarnations of the Doctor to try to stop him.
Although apparently with all the memories of Auton Rory. (It’s easy to miss, but as Amy walks to the Tardis in the reception hall, he says “I was plastic” to the person sitting next to him.)
