The crack is a real clue. They’re practically hitting us on the head with it. It was on the London space station.
BBC America has started advertising the new series. It premiers this weekend.
They showed a clip of the Daleks. The new Doctor makes a comment that they are afraid of him.
What happened to the humble Doctor? This new Doctor acts like he breaths fire. Remember how he told the eyeball ship to run? That’s not typical for the Doctor.
It reminded me a bit of Forest of the Dead when the Doctor told the Vashta Nerada to scan through all the books so they’d know who they were dealing with. No quite as aggressive as “basically… run” but could be an evolution of the character.
Really? It seems to fit in well for me. It was similar to how he acted towards the Sycorax way back in The Christmas Invasion, as well as being almost exactly the same speech he gave to the Vashda Narada in Silence in the Library/ Forests of the Dead.
I’m just more used to the low key Doctor. That casually walks into a tense situation, chattering away about whatever, and says,“Hello I’m the Doctor.” He doesn’t carry weapons. The Tardis doesn’t have laser canons. He uses his wits and knowledge to overcome the problem.
You’re right. Back in Christmas Invasion the Doctor was totally bad ass. I guess he does have powers we don’t often see.
But in this new season, the Doctor fires a gun. There’s (for me, and I’m a newish fan, having been dragged in by my husband, a raving Whovian) been a lot of tension between the Doctor hating guns and refusing to use one, and his genocides. I think the character getting older, crankier, and more visibly violent could be very interesting.
And either way, it’s not like anyone knows what it was being fired at. Face it, a gun pointed at a person is a weapon. A gun used to shoot out some glass to allow some people to escape a fire isn’t.
Well, he’s looking up at something, he says something like “If you value your existence, there’s one thing you should never put in a trap … me” then shoots. It looks to me like the bad guys are watching him on CCTV, and then he shoots the camera.
Anyone who assumes the obvious conclusion from a setup in a Dr Who trailer must not have been watching the show very much. If you see a clip of the Doctor pointing a gun and appearing to shoot, you can all but guarantee that what he’s actually doing is not pointing a gun and shooting.
To be fair, I’ll note that in the Fourth Doctor’s story The Seeds of Doom Tom Baker waves a gun around and threatens people with it. (He never uses it and says he never would, still it’s a very violent story and the Doctor’s pretty brutal in it.)
Heck, the last doctor pointed a gun at people and fired it in The End of Time. Have you all forgotten already? (He didn’t hit anybody of course, but he looked ready to.) I don’t think we’ve seen a consistently low-key, mellow Doctor since Peter Davison. All of them since have had a temper or at least dropped hints about what they were capable of. Tennant dropped members of the Family of Blood into black holes and collapsing universes!
It was so cool! The three of them are in the middle of a big NYC round of promotions for the series. They’ve been appearing in different places for various free Q&A’s all week. I went to the one at the Soho Apple Store yesterday. Moffat talked about some things we can expect to see this season, upcoming baddies & such, he also said that he is *not *adverse to bringing back things from the RTD years, as he put it “[he] **is **a thing from the RTD years!” He just would only do so if it fits the story, he wouldn’t just bring back a known character just at random.
Regarding the gun issue, Moffat said that with all the genocides & deaths the Doctor has caused over the years, him picking up a gun really shouldn’t be that shocking. It’s not like he won’t defend himself, he’ll give you a chance or two, but then you better run. That said, he did say that viewers will not be disappointed in how the gun is used, so I take it that means he doesn’t actually shoot someone. (Not that I thought he did, but people have been wondering.)
Some bits about how the relationship between The Doctor & Amy is a very big plot issue this season, but, Karen & Steven stressed, **not **in a romantic way. He hinted about some interesting developments to come with what those characters mean to each other.
“This is what I’m gonna do - I’m gonna rescue her! I’m gonna save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek fleet, and then I’m gonna save the Earth, and then - just to finish you off - I’m gonna wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky!”
All the people picking this episode apart need to go back to Star Trek!
Dr. Who scared the living crap out of me when I was a kid, and I’m proud to say is scaring the crap out of half my kids today. Dr. Who (was) about crappy props, corny stories, episodic cliffhangers, and now it’s Good stories with great props an sfx, and emotionally manipulative…but SILL has the ability to have kids watch it from behind the couch.
And Amy makes me feel funny. Yeah, I know, I’m old enough to be her father and I’m most likely 18 inches taller…but still, don’t ruin my fantasy.
I think they’re doing everything right, and as a guy that’s checked in on the last three Doctors, I’m pretty darned happy with the way it’s going. I told my wife I liked British Sci-Fi because it’s different. I can’t define it…it just is.
Yes, but even then Davros had the last word as the 5th Doctor was unable to actually pull the trigger. For me that darkest Doctor was McCoy’s, who destroyed Skaro, committing genocide in marked contrast to Tom Baker’s Doctor who couldn’t bring himslef to destroy even the Dalek embryo facility.
So far I’ve really enjoyed Smith’s run as the Doctor, he is a bit eccentric and reminds me a lot of Troughton, which is no bad thing.
The first ep. was a bit light on plot, I enjoyed the second and am really looking forward to this incarnation of the Daleks. This could be better than any of their appearances under RTD.
Hopefully, unlike the last few seasons, this Doctor won’t get bogged down in schmaltz and family affairs and will stick with good sci-fi stories.
Given the current economic climate and the fact that NASA are no longer planning a return to the moon and this could be how the future pans out.
Imagine British Rail in space. “Sorry mate, union rules, tea break is from 11.00 to 11.30, I’m not fixing the warp drive until then”. Plus the fact that H&S will insist on having at least three men watching while one actually does the work.
My toddler loves Doctor Who. We’re the only parents out drawing the TARDIS in sidewalk chalk while our kid waves a sonic screwdriver. One of his first words was “Dcotor”.
He’s just getting to the age where he can be scared by tv, and is starting to hide from the worst monsters.
