Doctor Who: The Parting of the Ways [open spoilers]

We get a couple of wolves in the next series, too.

Of course, by the time most of the SDMB sees that, I’ll probably be watching the 3rd series.

BWAHAHAHA!

I’m sorry, that was unpleasent and mean-spirited. But I want to watch Deadwood, Battleship Galactica and Lost, dammit!

Except that how was her being able to rescue the Doctor something that he would be afraid of?

No, he wasn’t afraid of her, but rather the infinite amount of power she absorbed from the TARDIS. Recall the look of horror on his face, and his comment about how no human should be able to contain it.

You are a cruel Clam. If it makes you at all happier, I do not enjoy any of the shows you mentioned, I would gladly trade all three for Dr. Who.
Without spoiling anything, can you just say if you like the new Doctor as much as the last?

I sure did expect those letters to fly back together, forming a clever anagram. I guess the delightful “Torchwood” anagram had me expecting such a thing. Dunno whether BAD WOLF can make anything very interesting, though. FLAW BOD, DAB FLOW, FAD BLOW? Those don’t exactly spark the imagination.

Frankly, I’ve enjoyed it better. Tennant’s style, while distinct from Eccleston’s, is in no way a disappointment, although it takes a little while to get used to. Despite a couple of dud episodes (New Earth, the second episode of the first series, is about Boom Town or Aliens of London quality, IMO), things have generally improved- the special effects budget has got a huge boost, if the quality of the effects in the last two-parter (The Impossible Planet and the Satan Pit, without doubt the two best episodes of Doctor Who I have ever seen in any series, good enough to have become a complete movie in themselves- my new standard for “episodes to get people hooked on Dr. Who with”) are anything to go by. The script’s quality has evened out, with the writers, producers and directors really getting a “handle” on what the new series is supposed to be about. Also, of course, we now have less exposition to deal with, meaning that the storytelling and character-development factors can be played up.

And the Christmas Special broadcast at the beginning of this year (no idea when you’ll see it, I’m afraid- although it should be the next thing you get) was fantastic. Tennant steals the show, despite being unconcious for half of it, and the foes are…terrifying. There is one scene that made me literally shiver, which I haven’t done before and episode of Dr. Who since I was 8.

I wasn’t implying that he was afraid of her.

I’d be interested in hearing perspectives from other UK viewers: without giving much away, is the second series as good, worse, or better than the first?

UK viewer - and a long, long time Dr Who fan - here.

I have to say I think the second series’ stories are maybe just a little weaker than the first series - with the exception of the most recent two-parter and the earlier ep with the return of Sarah Jane.

However David Tennant for me is a much, much better Doctor! He’s way, way hot.

Can’t comment on the hawtness, but I rather liked The Idiot’s Lantern, 2 part Age of Steel/t’other one, and the one with the werewolf! Thought that the stories are getting better, since the only real “dud” so far has been New Earth, whereas in the first series I thought Rose, the Slitheen two-parter, Longest Game* and Boom Town were all rather weak.

Ha! I’m going to email you Battlestar Galactica spoilers when it’s running in the USA and not GB.
Take that, you…

(Dammit. What does the French guy say in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”?
Help me out, here, Fellow Dopers)

You don’t frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, you sons of a silly person. I blow my nose at you, so-called “Arthur King,” you and all your silly English **K-nig-hts. ** --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go and boil your bottoms, you sons of silly persons!

I don’t want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

No, now go away before I taunt you a second time.

–French Soldier–

Eep!

I personally prefer the second series, but that’s probably due to the fact that the new doctor is Scottish and is originally from a town about 30km from me, so I’m rooting for the local(ish) lad.

Interesting how they’ve made him speak in a ‘generic’ English accent for the series. In the behind the scenes they have on the BBC website you hear him speak in his ‘normal’ voice.
What’s so wrong with a doctor having a Scottish accent?
I say nothing.
(with absolutely no sign of bias whatsoever :dubious: )

I also think Billy Piper’s acting is better in the second series. Shame she won’t be there for the third.

There’s one source for a Time Lord, and convently a female. Romana is in N-Space the last time you see her in Warriors Gate. The Thari ask her to stay and help free their people and she does along with K-9

Actually the proper response would be
“Is there someone else up there we could talk to?”

Don’t help him, then!
And why are they all bloody repeats tonight? The paper said there was a new one.

The Season is over, I think tonight was a mini-marathon.

You mean I can’t believe everything I read in the paper? And not a Battlestar episode in sight.

In the novels, Romana returned from E-Space (back to N-Space, where we all live) and became President of Gallifrey. Although no-one’s certain if the novels are canon or not, Russed T Davies (the executive producer, who also wroite for the novel series) has confirmed that Romana was indeed President of Gallifrey during the Time War.

And I am loving the second series, even more than the first. The quality is astounding, and every week when I think it can’t get any better, it does. “School Reunion”, “The Age of Steel”, “The Satan Pit” and, most especially “The Girl In The Firepalce” were superb. Tennant is a marvellous Doctor, and I’ve even come to love Mickey.
