Does any know about Kimonos?

It’s been awhile but I remember someone knowing about them.

Anyway a friend has me photographing some kimonos for selling on ebay and I’m just trying to find out somethings about them that maybe I should show.

Silver Tyger Girl collects kimonos.

Thanks, I couldn’t remember.

Here’s two good examples to follow:Kimono with Flowers, Brown Kimono

I’m assuming these are women’s kimono (the dead giveaway for men’s kimono is that the sleeves are not round at all and they’re sewn up the inside - women’s kimono has a gap there)

The most important things are pictures and measurements. For pictures, get a full length shot of the front, back, and lining if any. (Add ‘unlined’ or ‘hitoe’ to the description if there isn’t one). Also include pictures of any major damage, and mention it in the description.

For measurements, you need the length and the sleeve to sleeve. They’re usually given in centimeters, but inches works too.

Besides that, have a basic description including a reasonable guess of material (silk or polyester are the most common), and like all eBay auctions, shipping polices and prices and where you’ll ship to. Kimono is not that expensive to ship (I usually get mine for $12-15 from Japan).

I’ll be PMing you with my email if you want me to take a look.

There’s a lot about the pre-WW2 symbolic and social importance of kimonos in this book, which I really enjoyed: Memoirs of a Geisha - Wikipedia

If you’re going to be in Canton anytime soon, you might want to check out this exhibit: http://www.cantonart.org/32

Thanks guys.

I wouldn’t recommend Memoirs of a Geisha for kimono knowledge (I haven’t read it, but from what I’ve heard it has quite a few errors and just plain fictional stuff, which makes sense as it’s a novel). Liza Dalby has written two non-fiction books, Geisha and Kimono: Fashioning Knowledge, both of which are very factual, interesting, and accurate. Or if you want to go the free route, the forums at http://immortalgeisha.com have people who know far more than I ever will.

But all that’s far more than you need to know to sell them.
