“Telephone Man,” by Meri Wilson. She also did “Peter the Meter Reader.”
As long as we’re being nostalgic…how about Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road?
[sup]I’m older than I thought…[/sup]
I remember one of those “interview” songs that was about Jaws (the shark, of course–a 70’s phenomenon). Can’t remember what it was called…maybe “Mr. Jaws” or something? Somehow they were interviewing the shark and his answers were snippets of songs. Sample interview question:
Interviewer: How did that make you feel?
Answer: “Like a Rhinestone Cowboy…” (sung by Glen Campbell)
God we laughed so hard at this! Why??!!!
I do remember the Telephone Man song. No wonder my parents gave us disapproving looks whenever we sang it at the top of our lungs!
We use the line “Don’t look, Ethel!!” from Ray Steven’s “The Streak” all the time. Most do not understand the reference.
Dead Skunk by Loudon Wainwright III!!
Man one of America’s best singer-songwriters and he’s only remembered for a crappy 70’s novelty song. I saw him last year open for JOhn Hiatt, and the man is a scream! Most of his post Dead Skunk records are excellent, and I’d recommend anyone who loves music get his “more Love Songs” CD.
I remember those Dickie Goodman songs as well, especially Mr. Jaws, and one called Energy Crisis. THey were so funny when I was 12!
I once got the CD from the library Golden Throats. I’d expected to laugh my head off, but found it not funyn at all. The singers were really not that bad, even Shatner.
Maybe somethins wrong with me!
I once saw Martin Mull do the song Do The Nothing on tv. Was great! if short…
Good Lord, no. That song – which is actually called You Never Even Call Me By My Name – is a classic. And not that it matters, but it’s “Allan.”
Wasn’t he the guy on the guitar in the early MAS*H episodes?
Yes, that was him!
He also was the Dad on the short lived TV show Undeclared, and was the Mayor in the small town in Big Fish. (Loudon Wainwright III) (I haven’t quite figured out how to quote yet!)
