Are you happy with it? Does it handle streaming video well?
I used it for a while. Everything depends on how close you are to a tower. On the site there is a map showing the position of towers. Check that out. My friend was near a tower and had no problem with streaming video. The map showed two towers in my vicinity, but I was a couple of miles from both/each of them. By “near” I think I mean within half a mile or so. I was happy with the speed otherwise. Early in the morning it would be around 5Mps. Later, closer to 1.5. That’s the key. .
The good thing is there’s no contact and no download limits. When I cancelled the service to get high speed internet in my house from AT&T, Clear didn’t want the modem back. They said I can sign up again, for instance, for one month if I go out of town and don’t want to hunt for WiFi…You can use it in any city that has Clear.
Also, I got the modern that stands up somewhere in the house. Where you put it affects the speed. You want to be near a window on the side of the house where the tower is. Use the map.
My friend had the hot spot- a small modern that you can easily carry all over town. My modem was light as a feather, just big. And you had to plug it into a wall. Okay for use at home.
Read all over their web site. It’s very helpful. If I could have gotten more speed, I’d have stuck with it. Location, location, location.
My experienced was mixed. I got good speed, but it was very slow about DNS look-ups, so getting on a site would take 3 tries, but once there it was fine for loading or streaming. I never used it much but heavy users constantly accused Clear of throttling their connections on the company’s forums. I canceled during the holidays last year because my sister finally sprung for wi-fi so I pretty much never used it.
I had a terrible experience with them when I signed my mother up at her request; it was impossible to get a decent signal on the modem in any room in her house, or even walking around her yard outside the house (which I tested using a long extension cord). When I cancelled after two months because her service was completely unusable, they charged an early termination fee of over $100. I had also paid for the modem up front, so it made for a fairly nice sum down the tubes.
So for what it’s worth, fuck Clear.
I use Clear…in St Louis (university city)MO.
Mine runs month to month, there is NO cancellation fee but they WILL shut you off at the first of the month if you do not pay.
Streaming is pretty good, much better than my 3g iPhone (tethered).
I give them a 7.5 out of 10…
Month to month it (Clear) assumes I am in different locations…for the first few months it thought i was in SC…now it thinks I am in KC MO…hmmm?
