Seems like this crowd would… although I’m anticipating some will find him pretentious and too urban.
I’ve been walking in the morning and listening to Don’t Get Too Comfortable. The other joggers and walkers must wonder at the woman walking and laughing with tears running down her face. You’ve got to listen to him read his own stuff- his delivery is a priceless mixture of sophistication, arrogance, humility and self-deprecation. And just plain wit.
The subtitle of Don’t Get Too Comfortable is The Indignities of Coach Class, The Torments of Low Thread Count, The Never- Ending Quest for Artisanal Olive Oil, and Other First World Problems.
I like him a lot. He’s funny, smart, and has a amazing way with words. I just started reading Half Empty last night and I’m enjoying it thoroughly. Fraud was every bit as good as Don’t Get Too Comfortable.
I want be BE him when I grow up. Love love love love love him. He makes me pee myself with mirth.
CapnPitt & capybara, if you can LISTEN to him, don’t miss it! When HE reads the stuff, it’s a zillion times funnier, if that’s possible. His delivery is so DRY*… and he has a way of trailing off sentences as though it’s painful for him to speak the words and yet he is compelled to utter the truth. He is so funny and so endearing.
I’m thinking the Doper crowd would love his humor. Surprised more aren’t into him.
This makes me think of one time on MASH* when Hawkeye requested a DRY martini… he said he wanted “a veritable dust bowl of a martini.” David’s delivery is a veritable dust bowl.
Just saw this thread, yes, I LOVE David Rakoff. (didn’t he write for Salon.com a lot?). He should be a lot more well known, and he should write a lot more. Is he the one who wrote a chapter in one of his books on his exploration of the Bed & Breakfast places to stay - listed in Manhattan, of all places???
