The reason I ask is I’ve been seeing new, oversize web ads that don’t say anything specific but feature the key characters. They’ve popped up on Yahoo, excite, and a lot on Tripod and Snap.
What’s the point of new ads that don’t seem to have a product or site to push?
Just to keep the name popular for the next round of tickets, I would think.
The second movie seemed to spoof most of the Bond films, though, so I’m not sure what’s left over.
If he can’t squeeze another sequel or two out of the format, he’s not trying.
With over 200 Bond movies to choose from, there are infinite permutations to satarize.
And what else is sure fire for him? He’s had a few “small” pictures already. He can’t afford another.
Gnarly, just in case you are not exaggerating with the “over 200 Bond films”, it’s more like 20 films. Anyway, I am sort of not too thrilled with the idea of another Austin flick. I thought Spy Who Shagged Me was not as good as International Man of Mystery. It might just be me but I think the same thing happened with the Wayne’s World movies. The second one was crap compared to the first, mostly due to the attempted re-use of jokes from the first movie.
Myers has a number of pictures in the hopper, but another “Austin Powers” is not one of them. He may or may not come back around to it, but at the moment there isn’t an official project.
His concern at the moment is escaping the legal troubles surrounding “Sprockets,” which he delivered to Universal and then reneged on. Universal was going to sue him to force him to make the movie, then threw up their hands and said they were giving up. There’s no reason they couldn’t try to squeeze him for a few dollars, but it looks like they’re abandoning the idea of actually making the film.
The thing about the Sprockets movie si that, as far as I can make out, what Mike actually was saying was “It’s not ready to make yet, the script needs work, don’t rush me” and the studio overreacted and started accusing him of strongarm tactics blah blah blah. Then they pulled out altogether.
Also, a new Austin Powers is definitely in Mike Myers’s plans, (he has said he’d love it to be an ongoing franchise) but nothing is on the drawing board yet.
(If it wasn’t so crude, it’d look good as a Saturday Morning cartoon, actually…)
