Does Cold or Rainy weather deter you from Leaving the house for routine errands?

11 F this morning. :frowning: :smack: I really was craving a Bacon Egg Cheese Biscuit from McDonald’s. I’m salivating thinking about it. It’s Too darn cold. I poured myself a bowl of cereal and made toast.

I went to the Grocery yesterday. A balmy 18 F. I have no plans too budge from the house again for a few days.

It would be different if I had a Attached garage. Where I never stepped foot into the miserable cold. It would nice making a run to McDonald’s in a robe & slippers. I have a remote starter. But you have to be 10 ft from the car. I still have to step outside and walk down the driveway to start the car. Then go back inside while it warms up. (a kill switch prevents theft)

I go to work and take care of important errands regardless of weather. Dr.Appointments, trips to the bank, groceries are things that must be done.

I miss being able to indulge breakfast at McDonald’s or grabbing some Chicken at Popeyes. Starbucks is always nice. It’s just not worth getting out to pickup takeout food. We eat out twice as often in the Spring and Summer.

I’ve wondered how much money businesses lose in the bitter cold winter?

It rains ten solid months in Western Oregon … that’s way to long to hole up in your house …

It seems incredible that I lived on Cape Cod in Massachusetts until I was nine. I loved sledding and building snowball forts.
Cold weather doesn’t bother kids and young adults like it does middle aged people.

I can’t begin to imagine living in Massachusetts now. I’d adapt but it wouldn’t be something I’d enjoy.

My wife and I are discussing a new home. A double garage will be mandatory. I’d install a shop heater to at least keep it 45 F in the garage when I’m working on projects.

We don’t have a car, it’s handcycle and trailer.
Cold isn’t a problem, daytime winter temps usually reach over 40-45 by mid-morning.
Rain, I have a rainsuit but the big problem is keeping what has been bought dry so errands are planned around the weather forecast.

We have an integral garage, which helps. One of the reasons I have a 4WD vehicle is so I do not have to change my plans due to weather.

I have a garage attached to the house, so going out in the cold is not a big deal. If there’s enough snow that I need to clear the driveway, I may stay indoors until I work up the energy to do it, though.

Depends on how cold, and how rainy/snowy.

This a.m. it was -9F. If I didn’t have to go to work, I doubt I would have left the house if I didn’t have to.
It is always funny - even when we think the larder is low, we can always manage to scrape together a couple of days’ worth of meals to delay a grocery trip.
We call it “pulling a Kramer” - after the test drive ep.

Grocery is walkable 2-3 blocks away, and attached/unheated garage.
In the Chicago area, when the weather is EXCEPTIONALLY bad, it will generally be better (roads plowed/salted, temps in double digits) within a day or 2.

I usually plan my errands in a block so I’m never going out for one quick thing. Yesterday it was 9 degrees here or something like that, but I had to hit 3 stores so I went on my merry way. My car is in a garage. Not sure if I could deal with having a car outside.

Actually, Sunday it had snowed a ton over night and I was hungry. I could have ordered pizza but my front walk was covered in snow so it was easier for me to drive out to the drive-thru than to shovel the walk and order in  Once I was full of lunch I was able to go shovel and salt the walk and now I’m ready for delivery again!

No garage.

Cold: business as usual.
Rain: for non-urgent errands, I’ll wait for better weather.

The garage or lack of one doesn’t matter. There are days when I don’t have to go in to work and I prefer to stay in in my jammies, especially when it’s cold out. It would take a fire, traumatic injury, or a seriously ill cat to get me out one of those days. Trip to the store can wait.

With me it’s the snow rather than the cold. I hate having to go out and shovel snow off my car and driveway before I go somewhere. It’s a prospect that makes me question whether I really need to make the trip.

If I let the weather deter me, I’d rarely leave the house.

We had -25F to -40F with windchill all week. I did grocery shopping, I walked the dogs on our trail behind the house (short walks because of their feet), went to my sister’s for New Years’ Eve, my husband and I bundled up one day and did a 2 mile walk around the neighborhood. I didn’t go outside for just the fun of it, but I did do most of my regular things. Rain doesn’t stop me from doing anything. As long as you have the proper clothing on, it’s not bad.

Snow (heavy snow) will keep me from driving, but The Dog must go for at least a short walk whatever the weather. Also, if snowy, the driveway must be shoveled even if I’m not leaving, because I’m picky that way. So I am definitely gonna go out in it. The question is if I’m gonna drive.

I voted Yes, and I don’t have a garage. This is understandable because I don’t have a car either. Errands mean bus rides and plenty of them. So yes, cold and wet weather will affect whether I go out on a chore, unless it’s an emergency.

My goal since I retired (2009) is to never need to do any errands from 12/1 to 5/1. (In 94 it snowed on May 4th here.) I am 65 and paid my dues driving in extremely hazardous conditions. I buy everything in bulk and my spare bedroom is very well stocked as is the freezer. I do not use any perishables (milk or eggs.) I love the snow and cold weather. I learned to drive in the Winter of 1968 in New England and IIRC it was very snowy and cold that year and plowing of the city streets appeared to be optional.
Why should I be on the road unnecessarily when others need to get where they are going. I would feel pretty stupid if I got into an accident when I did not really need to leave the house.

We have an attached garage and leaving here is no big deal. However, our grocery store doesn’t have an attached garage, nor do any of the businesses I patronize. I avoid going out in rain and snow unless I absolutely have to. Whether I venture forth in the cold depends on how bored I am and how much I want to do whatever requires me to go out.

I never want to leave home. I could easily hibernate for years. Weather is not the problem usually. I just rather stay home.

Two nights ago, I had just gotten back home from the airport. I had/have a cold or a bit of flu. My fridge was bare. I was going to buy groceries, but my car was frosted over. I decided to walk to the H-E-B (just a few hundred yards away,) but it was so cold that my ears were in serious pain within minutes. I gave up and went home and ordered a pizza, then went to bed.

When I lived in the midwest, snow, ice, and stupid-cold would stop me from going anywhere nonessential.

Now I live in the Puget Sound area. The temperature rarely goes below freezing, but it does rain often. You have to learn to live with it. Get an insulated raincoat and some duck shoes; go about life as usual.

I’ve suffered worse, for longer, on way too many occasions for the exposure from routine errands to be a big deal. It might deter me a tiny bit, but I said no as the closest.
