Does every phone need a DSL filter?

Just got DSL last week, and followed the directions to a T. Amazingly… everything worked right out of the box.

Question: Instead of putting the filters inline of every phone, would one filter put inline of all the phones work just as well? Of course, I would run a seperate non filtered pair to the modem.

Thanks

I was given a bunch of line filters myself. Never hooked 'em up. Never had a problem. Have you tried not using them and seeing if you actually NEED them?

Yep. Line is terrible scratchy/noisy without em.

All,

It just occured to me that this would work fine. My worry was whether one filter could support multiple phones… but just now it occured to me that there aren’t very many times when I’m using more than one phone.

Sorry …

To answer your question however, it is yes, as it is filtering the line signal, which has nothing to do with the number of phones on an individual line wire.

There’s extra noise (electrical noise, not audible) introduced by extra connections and devices. The biggest problem is trying to use a dialup modem on the voice half of a filtered line that’s got numerous phones attached. Basically, if there’s no problem, then you’re OK. If you get cut-offs, slow speeds, etc., then the first thing to do is re-filter!
