I have a wall jack for one DSL/phone connection, which currently runs straight to my DSL modem. I would like to splits the incoming phone line into two plug-ins with an adapter I bought. I would like to run one of the splits to my DSL modem and one line to a standard phone.
My question is, do I put the DSL filter in the wall jack to the splitter, or from the split line to the DSL modem?
Or better yet, should I not do this at all for performance reasons?
Thanks,
You put the filter between the split line and the telephone.
At least that’s how it works for my DSL; the filter weeds out all the digital “noise” the computer uses, so folks using the telephone don’t hear that stuff. The line that goes to your DSL modem should be as unfiltered as possible.
I just did this on Saturday. I put in a dual wall plug, put the DSL line in one of the plugs, and the DSL filter into the other for the phone. I haven’t seen any loss of performance. This was what was recommended to me.
All a DSL filter is is a low pass filter - a filter that allows low frequencies to pass through, but attenuates high frequencies.
DSL runs at higher frequencies than voice service does. Theoretcially, it operates at frequencies too high for humans to hear. However, due to various issues like poor line quality, sub-par cable connections, worn or outdated equipment on the line and the like, the DSL signal often bleeds down into human-hearable range, resulting in a very distinctive static noise on the line(well, at least distinctive to me after having supported it for over a year - in fact, I called a friend up the other night, and after about 5 seconds asked him when he got DSL - Apparently it had been installed just that day, but never told me he was getting it :)). Most of the time the static is not very noticeable, but I’ve had customers where the noise was so bad they had to call into DSL tech support on cell phone because you couldn’t understand t hem on the land line. The DSL filter filters out the frequencies used by DSL so you don’t hear that static.
