Does everyone like eating scad?

Well of course not. A lot of people dont eat fish. But for those who do, you probably know what I’m getting at. Scad mackerel is found abundantly in nearly all seas and eaten by nearly all fishing cultures. It’s one of our greatest food resources. I hear the best places in America to live in if you like eating cheap fresh scad are Hawaii, California, and Washington state. Any comments?

Never heard of it, but in reading about it I’m pretty shocked by how bad ciguatera sounds (a toxin concentrated in certain reef fish). Wow!

I dont think mackerel is a reef fish. Might be wrong there.

Scad isn’t a true mackerel, If you use the term “mackerel” in europe you would be given this, or something very similar.
In that case, yes. It is very widely eaten in europe and a firm favourite in our house. I’m replying to this post specifically because my children are just having some smoked mackerel for lunch as we speak.

Relocated to Cafe Society.

Is scad like scrod?

googles

Scad.

I’ve had pompano, and probably other members of the family. When he was 19 o 20, my brother worked on a shrimp trawler. The guys cooked fish caught in the nets with the shrimp, and would bring home any fish caught on the last day (and a good deal of shrimp, too).

I probably wouldn’t search it out in a fishmonger’s, but I’d eat it if it were on a plate in front of me.

ETA: I lived in Florida at the time, and the fish would’ve been caught offshore of northeast Florida.

My mistake, I guess. The first link for scad that wasn’t about the Savannah College of Art and Design was for mackerel scad, which then led to ciguatera and dinoflagellates and stuff.

Interesting diversion if nothing else!

I’d rather get scrod.

No, but I usually try most kinds of seafood when offered.

After reading the Wikipedia link, I’ve had Jack mackerel, so I guess I have.

The Internet is full of people saying this in every way imaginable, but this is the first time I’ve read it in the pluperfect subjunctive.

Never heard of it. I’ve noticed that most people think mackerel in general is too oily and fishy.

Freshly caught mackerel is lovely, the problem is it degrades quickly
