I like cod and ocean perch. Walleye is meh. Tilapia is nasty. Need to add more fish to my diet and I’m looking for suggestions.
Salmon, halibut, cod, tuna.
you mean the fish i wish i could have in a dish?
Salmon, cod, haddock, mackeral, tuna steaks, swordfish, trout. (there isn’t a fish I don’t like, unless it’s dark, oily fishy bluefish). They’re selling something called ‘swai’ in some stores, haven’t tried that.
Other than tilapia, the above are the main fish I’ve found in a supermarket. I haven’t seen mackeral or trout, very pretty fish, in quite a while. Haven’t seen monkfish in ages, either.
A fish store should have a bigger selection. Bring a lot of money. I bought a little piece of amazing steamed halibut, for $7. It was almost $30 a pound . Sole is lovely, too, again very expensive.
There’s only one species of fish. It grows a layer of fried batter when it dies. Apparent variations are produced by stripping the breading and adding food coloring. All else you’ve heard is UL.
Yep. Of course I like sashimi and sushi. If I’m cooking at home, then:
Wild-caught Alaskan salmon
I don’t buy the farmed ones, as the local stuff tastes better. I usually prepare this as Cajun salmon (homemade rub); baked salmon with dill, with a lemon-dill béchamel sauce; baked or grilled teriyaki salmon; or gravlax and hovmästarsås
Halibut
I rarely make it myself, since it’s expensive. I bake it.
Cod
Fish and chips.
Haddock
Fish and chips. This is my favourite for fish’n’chips, but no longer easy to find here since Trader Joe’s discontinued it.
Tilapia
Breaded and fried; battered for fish tacos*; cooked with Roma tomatoes, garlic, onion, and capers in olive oil (fish added at the end) and served over angel hair pasta; scored three times on each side, dusted in seasoned flour, and fried whole in oil and served with hoisin sauce and sliced fresh jalapeños or serrano chiles.
Tuna
Seared Ahi tuna (rare in the middle), tuna salad made from canned tuna.
Mahi Mahi
Marinated in olive oil, garlic, cilantro, lemon juice, and whatever strikes my fancy at the time, and grilled over charcoal. Serve on a plate with side-dishes, and use the leftovers (if any) for fish tacos*.
Mackerel
So far, only canned and made into fish cakes. I want to charcoal grill a whole fish on the barbie.
Tinned fish
Sardines, anchovies, herring. Right out of the can.
Other fish
I’m not picky. I’ll eat any fish, cooked in one of the afore-mentioned ways. I like kippered herring (not from a can) and pickled herring. I don’t make those at home.
- Fish tacos: Corn tortillas (only), shredded cabbage, crema or Mexican spice-seasoned sour cream, pico de gallo.
Really mild. I usually use it for fish curry because it doesn’t taste like a hell of a lot on it’s own.
Hawaiian Butterfish (aka Escolar or Walu) is incredibly delicious. But don’t eat too much; and never eat it the night before a job interview.
It sounds like you prefer a very mild fish, so if you’re trying salmon go for the Atlantic, Alaskan King or Scottish varieties. If it is marked “Coho” or generically “Pacific” it may be too gamey for a first-timer. Halibut is a great option or cod lovers. It has a lighter texture, and can become “feathery” if overcooked, but is mild and rich if cooked gently.
Another vote against Tilapia. It tastes muddy IMHO. Red snapper is not too bad, when it’s really Red Snapper.
First fish on seeing the thread title I thought of was walleye, but that got quickly shut down in the OP.
I would give haddock, bass, and halibut a shot. Also, I love monkfish–aka “poor man’s lobster.”
I believe the answer you are looking for is catfish.
Ooh, baked Cajun catfish! Or breaded and fried catfish! How could I have forgotten those?
Red (sockeye) salmon, sauteed in butter until it’s just flaking and still red in the middle. Pair with some potatoes roasted in olive oil and rosemary.
Phillips describes swai as similar to catfish.
Tuna, of course.
Tilapia, salmon, blowfish (though I haven’t had it since I was a kid; it’s the American version of fugu), haddock, trout, flounder.
Definitely, my favorite fish is salmon.
Salmon is definitely good. And if you like salmon, check out trout (ETA: and Arctic char, too.)
Crappie is probably my favorite game fish, but I like most fish.
Don’t see flounder listed. They’re kinda bony, but good.
Red Snapper is my favorite fish by far.
I also enjoy Salmon and trout but I haven’t had trout in over a decade since I left NJ. Flounder is great most of the time but I have had some awful flounder too.
Tilapia is usually inoffensive. It’s either tasty or just neutral to me. Catfish, on the other hand, varies a lot depending on the source. My favorite catfish is caught in brackish water. I have had the misfortune of tasting “muddy” catfish and it ruins the flavor.
You know what I’d like right now? Some sort of white-fleshed ocean fish, breaded and fried, with some tartar sauce. Not a thick chunk of fish, like fish & chips; a nice flat fillet, breaded, not battered. Maybe in a corn tortilla or a French roll, with some coleslaw on it.
Why do the gas station and the supermarket have to sell chicken strips, when fish is so much more tasty?
I’m not a big fish lover (I don’t like fishy-tasting things, and fish tend to taste fishy, no big surprise), but I do enjoy halibut. It’s expensive, but deeelicious.
