Does iTunes have to be the default?

Basically, every time I use iTunes it makes itself the default format for all audio instead of Windows Media Player, which is my preference, so every time I put something on my iPod I have to then put the settings back on WMP to make sure it’s the default.

And that’s damn annoying.

So what I’m wondering, is there any way to stop iTunes changing itself to the default all the time or do I just have to keep doing it over and over again until I hunt down and kill the chairman of Apple?

huk24, I’ve changed your thread title to better reflect the question you’re asking, and I’m moving this to GQ.

When I install Itunes it asks me if I want it to be the default player or not.

Maybe you selected this on setup and it defaults back to itunes each time you run the program.

Reinstalling should fix this but I’ll see if there’s an easier way…

Edit - Preferences - General tab

has a check box: “Use iTunes as the default player for audio files”. Uncheck that, and re-assign the extensions you want to the players you want (in any folder Tools - Folder Options - File Types).

Great. Thanks so much.
