Does picking Edwards as VP increase the odds of a Kerry assassination attempt?

We have what is basically a two party system, and for some reason politics is something that gets crazy people all fired up, so they vote. Since they vote that basically boils down to there being a lot of left-wing nuts and a lot of right-wing nuts. The left has Ted Kaczynski and the lovely folks at ELF, the right has abortion bombers and people who are more prone to think God gives them to-do lists…

Suppose one of the “God told me to…” people snap, do you think that God is more likely to tell them to kill Kerry if he wins the election, considering that he’s now picked Edwards as a running mate? The reason I wonder this is that a lot of people who will probably vote for Bush have said they might have voted for Edwards (I believe that’s even how the GD “poll” shook out) had he gotten the dem nod. If he’s the VP, that makes him President if someone manages to off Kerry.

Or do you think that God telling you to kill someone has no bearing on who you’d rather see as president? Or would you argue that God only tells people who are very partisan to kill people, so it doesn’t matter since it wouldn’t get Bush back into office anyway?

Disclaimer: Elfkin477 does not endorse the murder of presidential canidates. She just has a morbid imagination.

The successor of the President probably does not even register with any nut-job who would try to assassinate the President.

I’m sure Lee Harvey Oswald was not in the LBJ Fan Club.

However, the life insurance factor of a VP (particularly Dan Quayle) should never be underestimated.

I don’t think people in the “Tin-foil hat Society” think beyond the trigger pulling. They shoot Presidents for personal fame (infame?) and not for political change, if you ask me.

Overheard in the public restroom: “That’ll leave a skidmark all the way to the treatment plant!”

Generally true, but not always. In the Garfield assassination, Charles J. Guiteau shot and fatally wounded the new President James A. Garfield in the lobby of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Depot in Washington, D.C. as he yelled, “I am a stalwart and Arthur is President now!”

But today, I doubt any Edwards supporters would even dream of assassination to make him president. He’ll get that chance in 2012 after 8 years in the VP position.

Get thee down to NYC and see ASSASSINS before it closes. Or at least buy the new cast recording in a couple of weeks.

You think I care who I kill?
I no care who I kill
Long as it’s King!

  • Song from Giuseppe Zangara, attempted assassin of President Elect FDR

In answer to the OP: well, not really. Of the nine mentioned in the musical (three others were left out; one was totally insane and two were Puerto Rican nationalists) none acted as the Will of God, although a couple probably thought He would approve. The most unhinged one was “disappointed office seeker” Charles Guiteau, killer of Garfield in 1881, who wrote a poem called “I Am Going to the Lordy”, which he actually recited on the scaffold and which Sondheim has set to music.

Are you asking if a Bush supporter might want to kill John Kerry just so John Edwards would become President?

Not being a complete nutjob, I can’t speak for them, but I would think the impulse would be to kill them both so that Dennis Hastert, as Speaker of the House, would be next in line.

Just a morbid answer to a morbid question. I, too, do not endorse the murder of presidential candidates.

I doubt it. Last time someone tried to shoot a president, it was in order to be united with Jody Foster in heaven. I don’t think it was really a political dispute.

I wouldn’t have said this prior to yesterday, because I wouldn’t want to encourage anyone.

But…what if McCain was the VP selection and they won the election? I bet there’s a lot of people who’d be thinking about it.

Just a little sidetrack note:

There have been an unusually large number of bursts of questions regarding assasination of Democratic candidates on the SDMB in the past year.

Like I said, they come in bursts, etc. I am assuming that many of the OPs are tuned into certain media sources where these situations are discussed.

So, just out of curiosity and nothing more, I was wondering if the OP could fill me on on what prompted the question? And in particular, if prompted via a media source, what that source was? (Keeping in mind that some people just think of these things out of the clear blue.)

The frequency at which such questions are asked is disturbing. I am sure that none of the posters to the SDMB are actually considering such a thing, but like I said, they might be hearing about such things from other places.

Emphasis mine. Excellent line. Apparently the Left doesn’t get a To-Do list from their fringe group tin foil hat wearers. To Bad, that would be interesting to read.

  1. Bring down The Man.
  2. Buy non-floridated toothpaste.
  3. Put another incomprehesible bumper sticker on the El Camino.

After five years in a Vietnam prison, I think McCain could kick any assassin’s ass ( provided it was a close range attempt. Long distance, he would be SOL.)

Please note that Shirley Ujest does not endorse the assassinations of political figures. It jams up the networks with 24/7 coverage and preempts Reality TV.

And the time before that it was a Manson groupie.

Isn’t flouridation a right-wing bugbear?

You can’t fool me! Squeaky Fromme was part of a conspiracy to give the White House to a Rockefeller!
