I’m allergic to milk, and haven’t really drank it in over 15 years. When I was a little kid, I loved! it and used to chug glasses. Now, whenever I smell actual milk it smells completely disgusting. If I make a butter and milk based frosting, I have to recruit tasters to tell me when it’s good because the strong smell of milk makes it taste nasty to me as well. Ice cream still smells delicious however… Anyone else have a similar experience?
Sadly, no. I’m allergic to oranges, and they smell wonderful to me. If they smelled bad to me, I probably wouldn’t miss them so much.
Of course I’m also gluten intolerant, and if the smell of that repulsed me I’d have problems.
Fish allergies - smells absolutely awful. I hold my breath walking past fishmongers. But even if I wasn’t allergic I can’t imagine it’d smell all that pleasant.
Nope. Most of the plants I’m allergic to don’t seem to have much of a smell at all to me, and what I can smell isn’t unpleasant.
Some of them do, some of them don’t. Most of my food allergens don’t have particularly strong smells (quick - what’s the smell of peas? Or lentils?) but even so, some of them can smell pretty good.
Except tomatoes. The smell of tomatoes turns my stomach and can even make me gag. I suspect that’s because, before I was diagnosed, people forced me to eat things with tomatoes (Just have a taste of that spaghetti! Refusing to eat it is rude! How can you not like pizza? Either eat it or go hungry. How can you not like ketchup? Anyhow, it’s only a little bit…) Every time I ate tomatoes I got violently ill, often puked, definitely had diarrhea for days, my entire body itched, and amazing rashes bloomed across my skin. Classic negative conditioning: subject allergic to allergen, allergic undergoes about 2-3 days of horribly unpleasant side effects, suddenly allergic doesn’t want to be anywhere near the allergen.
Needless to say, this can be an issue if I walk into a Mexican or Italian restaurant.
Some smell better than others, but I don’t think there is any real link between the allergy and the scent.
I have a peanut allergy, and while I don’t much care for the smell of peanuts or peanut butter, I don’t think it’s disgusting.
No, most of the foods I am allergic to smell great.
I can eat about 2 bites of fresh pineapple before the inside of my mouth starts to break out in sores. I don’t think anything on earth looks and smells as enticing to me as fresh pineapple.
I don’t immediately break out in sores, but fresh pineapple make my mouth and lips “buzz” kinda like they are vibrating and my tongue will swell slightly. I love fresh pineapple, but I have to be content with canned pineapple and then in very small amounts. When I went to Disney World and stayed in the Polynesian Resort they had pineapple with almost every meal and I ended up biting of sections of the sides of my tongue. Not too fun.
I’m also allergic to peanuts, but in my case, they smell horrible. In fact, peanuts and peanut butter don’t even smell like an edible substance to me. They smell more akin to some kind of toxic solvent or something.
I actually don’t get an allergic reaction from peanut ‘fumes’, but the smell is so repellent that I will go far out of my way to avoid it. I’m also very sensitive to the smell or taste so that I can generally detect pretty small amounts (particularly of peanut butter). I’ve always looked at this as my bodies adaptation to my severe allergy to enable me to easily avoid exposure.
No. Shrimp smell WONDERFUL. I need a bib just to wipe up all the drool.
I’m not allergic to anything, but I have a friend who’s allergic to several things – and they smell great to her. Bakeries make her sad.
